July 17, 2011

Recently, Square-Enix has released high-resolution screenshots for Final Fantasy XIII-2.  In addition, gameplay video has leaked on the internet and showcases some of the gameplay features.  The demo is from Japan Expo 2011.  New features include the Cinematic Action Sequences, revamped camera and dialogue options.

Familiar locales such as Lake Bresha make a return in FFXIII-2.  Returning characters include Team Nora for instance, although it is unknown whether or not they will play a bigger role than in FFXIII.  Paradigm Shifts also make a re-appearance.  Check out some of the cool new media!

Main Final Fantasy series coming back to Nintendo?
May 23, 2011

A recent rumor has surfaced on several internet sources in regards to Final Fantasy XV.  Recently, Nintendo's planned list of goodies to be shown at this year's upcoming E3 leaked and supposedly claims that FFXV will be shown on "Project Cafe" during their press conference.  For those that do not know, Project Cafe is the codename for the next generation incarnation of the Wii console.  Some rumored features includes HD graphics, Blu-Ray drive and a touch input controller.  It will be revealed and playable at E3.

What are the chances of a main FF title appearing on a Nintendo console again?  The last time this happened was when Final Fantasy VI was released on the SNES in 1994.  Given the revenue from multi-platform releases (i.e. - Final Fantasy XIII on the XBox360), success of FF remakes on the DS, and with several new consoles from Nintendo, such as the 3DS, NGP and Cafe, this sounds like a very good possibility.  Nintendo is anxious to make a big impact as usual, so this would certainly be a major boost.  Then you get into the question of whether FFXV would be console-exclusive or multi-platform.  There is little doubt that Square-Enix will make the game multi-platform, as it would be silly to suggest otherwise.

It will be interesting to see how this rumor plays out.  In my opinion, I think there is a very good chance this is going to happen.

Final Fantasy V and VI on PlayStation Network
April 16, 2011

The Japanese division of Square-Enix has recently announced that Final Fantasy V and VI will be available on the PlayStation Network under their "Game Archives" services.  Both SNES classics feature additional content, including new CGI scenes for instance.  No word yet on a North American or European PAL release but I would expect that it will be in the future sometime.

Flash Bug Fixed!
April 16, 2011

For quite some time, there has been a bug in our Flash navigation top panel.  Users would click on a page (e.g. Final Fantasy XII) which then renders the navigation panels useless.  We have hard coded the URLs such that the server knows the Flash controls are running on site, so this issue will not occur anymore.  Other cosmetic updates were applied so feel free to look around!

Earthquake shuts down Final Fantasy XI and XIV servers
March 21, 2011

As part of Japan's efforts to conserve energy in the aftermath of the recent devastating earthquake/tsunami tragedy, Square-Enix and many other Japanese game companies are working together.  Some online gaming services in Japan will be temporarily shut down, including servers for Final Fantasy XI and XIV.  There is no date for return of these services but in the meantime, PlayOnline services for the month of April will be free.

More information on the service downtime can be found here:  http://lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com/pl/news/detail?newsId=5dff88cfd260fd4cbe729ae70550163846399ef0

FF Versus XIII trailer
February 28, 2011

Recently, IGN has shown a trailer, consisting of over 6 minutes worth of gameplay.  The trailer video is all in Japanese and appears to take on a more realistic tone in terms of setting, minus the robots.  One of the key translated lines include "This is a fantasy based on reality".  It is still unknown how this game will be taking shape.

See below for IGN's trailer.  This title will continue to breed a large amount of speculation in the coming months.

More FFXIII-2 hints
February 28, 2011

According to FF producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Motomu Toriyama, FFXIII-2 will be more darker in terms of ambience and eliminate the "pop-like" feel of its predecessor.  The plot is set to be expanded upon and will introduce some old characters in unexpected ways.  This title begins where FFXIII left off.  Gameplay is also believed to be revised but still based on FFXIII's game mechanics.  Currently, the game is slated to be shipped in sometime this year in Japan and expected to do the same next winter in the US and Europe.
