RPG Maker Editorial
By: Jesus Nieves (Battousai)
RPG games have been a vital and important aspect in a gamers’ life.
Especially for old-school RPG fans. From Final Fantasy to Dragon warrior,
from Tales of Symphonia to Legend Of The Dragoon, from Secret of Mana to
Xenosaga. You can name it all. But being an RPG fan not only the playing
that counts, but to create one of course. I feel that to be a real fan, you
got to offer your ideas and a RPG by yourself to other fans too.
You may ask “How the heck am I going to do that?” Well the answer might be
easy to tell in theory. Some people have heard that people creates programs
builder, like Microsoft Visual C++ (Programming language), but RPG oriented,
that we can create our own RPG Game. There are tools these days available at
the internet at free or cheap prices these days. But one of them calls the
attention and that is RPG Maker. Not the Agetec’s RPG Maker for Playstation,
there is software for the PC.

RPG Maker for PC is a product by a cooperation of EnterBrain inc. and Yoji
Ojima. It was designed to have a friendly user interface to enable people to
create RPG games of their own. There are at least three versions that
usually people can find, RPG Maker XP, 2000 and 2003(Latest Version).
Althougth there are more software, 2003 can be considered illegal to have,
due is the final product as now. Nothing has been announced yet, but if a
future version is about to release, then 2003 will be legal by then. RPG
Maker has taken the title to be called the strongest RPG editor of all. All
you need to create an RPG are files which happens to look like a picture,
but the program can recognize the picture as a Character (for example)

(CharSet File for RPG Maker)

This is the actual interface as you start. Is really (more or less) easy get
used to it. I really recommend it, as I am a current user of the program.
Although I haven’t designed a strong product of myself, I have done castles,
plains, random fights (Yes you can design and assign battles too ^_^). If
you want to get it, try contact me, since I don’t want to get the source go
public. But answering why I said that in theory is easy to create a RPG, is
that you really need to do the harder thing of the making, which is the
originality from you my dear reader. Yes, you need to break your brain a
little but I will name a list of task that you need:
1.Think about a storyline-based (Not copying) on actual event or an
historical event
2.Write it down on a paper or blank book
3.Think on a time line and a world if it isn’t going to be planet
earth-based
4.Be careful on selecting and designing the name and the looks of the
characters, Crap happens, remember that
5. Start preparing a draw of the map and how you visualize the characters
6.Ask at least two friends who are RPG fans (Obviously) about what they
think
7.Check anything you have done until now, preventing any error
8.Before beginning with RPG Maker, have a few updates (Check for custom made
Character Set, etc.) as far as I looked, the best site for resources is
http://www.kobrasrealm.com/2003res.php.
9.Be patient on using the program and grateful because you have to only drag
the objects and all the equations that pro programmers do, but ain’t easy
either.
10.After you finished the RPG, make a CD backup and have the friends from
tip #6 to test it
11.If they like it, produce more copy and sell it not far as $10( my
recommended price if you want to have profit), maybe you want to move on
Ebay, but I leave that to you ^_^
