Valentine's Special: Love Stories in Final Fantasy
By: wsim
Final Fantasy VIII
FF VIII
had an integral love story between Squall Leonheart and Rinoa Heartilly.
It appeared to
be central to some of the important themes that the game was trying to
convey and their loving embrace
also graced the box art cover. FF VIII was perhaps the first FF title
with a true love story involved within it. But the love between Squall
and Rinoa can be questioned. Rinoa's feelings for Squall does have a
slight effect on Squall's personality and motives. However, the love
appears to be almost entirely one-sided. Throughout the game, Squall
does little to really show his emotions towards Rinoa. Frequently,
Squall tends to ignore her and he doesn't really change as the game wears
on. What is interesting to note is that the personalities of Squall
and Rinoa are polar opposites of each other. Rinoa is warm, outgoing
and very friendly, while Squall is cold and antisocial. Despite some
major questions and flaws, there is in fact an interesting love story
between the two.
Final Fantasy IX
The
main relationship in FFIX existed
between a womanizing thief by the name of Zidane Tribal and Princess Garnet
of Alexandria. At first, Zidane plotted to abduct the Princess but
much to his surprise, Garnet wanted to be kidnapped in the first place.
She escapes from the castle and joins Zidane on his adventure in order to
find out the true reason behind her mother's odd behaviour. As
the story progresses, Zidane and Garnet fall in love. Throughout the
storyline, Zidane changes from being a carefree womanizer to a responsible
and stoic hero. Garnet longs to experience adventure and make
decisions on her own. Together, both Zidane and Garnet fulfill their
roles quite well.
Final Fantasy X
In FFX, the main love story was between a star Blitzball player named Tidus
and a gifted summoner named Yuna. Their love is one of mutual respect
for each other and progresses from friendship earlier in
the game. Tidus' mainly serves to help protect Yuna and also comforts
her throughout the numerous emotional burdens that she faces on the way to
defeating Sin. Yuna is afraid of being away from Tidus and she begins
to question many aspects of her quest as a result of her emotional
attachment from Tidus. As well, Tidus also appears to have feelings
for Yuna and frequently convinces her to learn to think for herself.
