Chapter Eleven: Creation

Miles dashed into the bridge of the Ragnorak without a moment’s hesitation. He found Rinoa lying on the floor, gagged and bound. He quickly sliced the ropes and ripped off the tape. She gave off an expression of pain, and then hugged him.
“Where’s Squall?”
Miles fell back and sat down, “He’s gone. Seifer got him.”
Rinoa sagged backwards, unable to conjure up the energy to show emotion. Miles in the meantime, got up, unable to think of something to say, and looked out the window.
“It gets worse…”
Rinoa sniffled a bit, and got herself up and looked out the window. They could see Edea’s house. Or, what was left of it. Troops were now crawling all over, battling with Garden forces, who had arrived earlier. There was a clear winner in the battle, and it wasn’t Garden. From the low flight of the Ragnorak, Miles could make out the bodies of Selphie, Irvine, Quistis, and he saw Zell valiantly fighting a losing battle. Hundreds of recruits lay dead, and fire was consuming the woods. Garden had lost, and despite being dead, Seifer had won.
Miles fell back into the chair, while Rinoa looked at the scene, eyes filling with tears. Five minutes passed, neither speaking nor moving, finally, Miles shook his head, he was getting the vision again, and the house was closer. Much closer. Then he realized what he had to do.
“Rinoa. I need you to boost my energy.”
She turned around and gloomily spoke, “What?”
“You’re a sorceress, if you transfer energy to me, it’ll give me enough to use my… power.”
“Miles, you’ll die.”
“I know, but… the way things are now… it’s a sacrifice well worth it.”
“Where will you go?”
“I don’t know, I don’t think I can control it, I’ll just go back to where my heart takes me.”
Rinoa smiled lightly, “You’ll go see her, won’t you?”
Miles shrugged, “Maybe, that’s up to my subconscious.”
“Will it do any good?”
“Who knows, but it is worth a shot.”
Rinoa nodded, “So… this is goodbye.”
“Yeah, it is. It’s been a nice trip Rinoa. I’ll see you on the other side.”
Raising her hands to her head, she frowned, “No, Miles, you won’t.”
Miles felt the energy flow through him, then concentrated hard, tapping whatever he could find. Then, everything turned white, colors blurred past him at incomprehensible speeds, and everything became a total, twisted blur. Then came no colors.
Darkness.
Nothing.

“JUST HANG ON!”
Jasmine grinned slowly, “Like I have a choice?”
She was dangling precipitously from Mile’s arm. Their hands were engaged in a tight grip, but it couldn’t last forever, and neither could summon the strength to get her back up on the ground.
I’ve got another chance. Miles had done it, he was back in the past, and he could change it. I can save her. You have the information you need. Zell will be here in just a second, all you need to do is hang on, and think of something!
“C’mon, Jas, don’t do this to me, please.”
She winked, “Hey, this ain’t bad, I’m getting a lovely view.”
Miles chocked, and his voice cracked with nervousness, “Just shut up, okay? Don’t waste your strength.”
Jasmine felt her arm pop out of its socket, and a tight stretching feeling. She gasped and tired to hang on.

Zell helped another person to their feet, and gave them a quick check for cuts or other wounds. He turned around to look for another wounded person, and then he heard the yell.
“JUST HANG ON!”
He turned again and saw Miles prostrate on the balcony, obviously hanging on to someone.
Jasmine!
He began a mad dash to the balcony; it only took him a few seconds.

Miles felt the sweat on his hand, as it got wetter, he realized that time was up. Jasmine’s grip was weakening every second.
She realized it too, and choked. Tears fell from her eyes as she spoke to him, “I love you.”
He grinned, “Don’t talk like this is the end.”
Suddenly, her hand slipped from his grip. Miles didn’t give it up though. In one fluid motion, he swung over the edge and reached down desperately with his hand to grab Jasmine. It worked. His left hand grabbed her by the wrist, while his right hand barely clung to the edge.
They stayed there a moment, Jasmine looking up and admiring Miles, while Miles refused to bring himself to look down. Zell came by in a second, and slid across the balcony, positioning himself perfectly to grab Miles.
He looked down, “Are you alright?”
Miles nodded, “I think so, just get us out of this!”
Zell nodded and reached down with both hands, grabbing Miles by the collar. He pulled, and slowly, but surely, Miles was lifted to the balcony. Jasmine gripped the edge of the balcony with her free hand, and held on for a quick moment before Zell lifted her up.
The three lay panting on the balcony. Miles rolled himself over to Jasmine’s side, and held her.
This’ll be the last time I get a chance.
With a silent gasp of air, he whispered to her, “I love you, never forget that.”
Then, Miles collapsed, completely unconscious.
