Part 7: Mark of a Traitor

FADE IN

INT. COREL - BARRET’S HOME - DAWN - FLASHBACK

A rooster CAWS from the outside. BARRET, who’s in bed, opens his eyes. He sits up and sees that his wife, MYRNA is still sound asleep. We see that Barret doesn’t have his gun-arm for he has his original functional hand.

MYRNA

(half asleep)

Are you leaving?

BARRET

I just got up, but I will be in a few minutes.

MYRNA

Wake me up when you do.

BARRET

You bet.

He leans forward and kisses his wife on the cheek.

INT. SHINRA BOAT - CARGO HOLDS - DAWN

Inside the crate Barret wakes up. It is very dark and only a few beams of light shine through the creases.

BARRET

What’s going on?

CLOUD looks through the creases.

CLOUD

I think we’ve stopped.

BARRET

We’re at Costa Del Sol?

CLOUD

Hopefully.

EXT. COSTA DEL SOL - DOCKS - DAY

The Shinra boat docks at the Costa Del Sol port. A few SHINRA SAILORS tie to the boat to the dock via rope. A platform slides down from the outside deck. HEIDEGGER and RUFUS walk down onto the docks. The sailors salute him.

SHINRA SAILOR #4

Welcome to Costa Del Sol sir.

RUFUS

Greetings, sailor. Has my helicopter arrived yet?

SHINRA SAILOR #4

Yes sir, it has. It’s waiting for you on the helipad.

RUFUS

That will be all.

SHINRA SAILOR #4

Aye, sir.

Rufus and Heidegger start to walk toward the helipad, which is on the north end of the port.

RUFUS

Did the crew find anything aboard?

HEIDEGGER

Nothing. Cloud must have been taken out by that thing that attacked us.

RUFUS

Let us hope that is true.

HEIDEGGER

Sephiroth was aboard though. He killed a few of our men.

RUFUS

So we lost both Sephiroth and Cloud?

HEIDEGGER

If they’re both alive then, yes. Don’t worry though the Turks are onto Sephiroth.

RUFUS

What about the airship?

HEIDEGGER

Palmer says it will be ready on schedule. The designer, Cid Highwind, has been most cooperative.

RUFUS

And how’s he going to feel when we take his ship?

Heidegger laughs.

HEIDEGGER

Don’t worry, all we have to do is keep making him believe that he’ll be the first man in space and he’ll do anything we want.

They walk onto--

EXT. COSTA DEL SOL - HELIPAD - DAY

RUFUS

(to pilot)

Start the engines.

PILOT

(inside the helicopter)

Yes, sir.

The PILOT starts the helicopter and the blades begin to spin.

HEIDEGGER

We have Reeve in Midgar. He’s waiting for you.

RUFUS

Good. Begin the interrogation.

Rufus and Heidegger board the helicopter. It quickly starts to hover and then flies off.

INT. SHINRA BOAT - CARGO HOLDS - DAY

The side of the crate opens and Cloud cautiously walks out. He looks around and sees that they’re alone.

CLOUD

It’s clear.

Barret and Yuffie walk out into the holds.

YUFFIE

Where are we?

CLOUD

Costa Del Sol, it’s a tropical resort.

He walks over to the other crate and KNOCKS on it.

TIFA (OS)

(inside crate)

Cloud?

CLOUD

Yeah, it’s me.

TIFA (OS)

(inside crate)

Have we stopped?

CLOUD

Yeah, you can come out.

The side of the crate opens up and Tifa, Aeris, and Red XIII all walk out.

RED XIII

We made it.

BARRET

(ripping off his disguise)

Why the hell am I still wearing this thing?!

He rips off the sailor suit and throws it aside.

AERIS

Aw, you looked so cute.

BARRET

Cute?

TIFA

(about her and Aeris’ disguise)

I guess we should get rid ours too then.

Aeris and Tifa take off their soldier uniforms and throw them next to Barret’s sailor suit.

CLOUD

Now let’s get the hell off this thing.

EXT. SHINRA BOAT - OUTSIDE DECK - DAY

Cloud sneaks up from the holds with the party. He walks to the edge and looks down at the docks. Not one Shinra employee is in sight.

CLOUD

Let’s go.

They walk down the platform onto--

EXT. COSTA DEL SOL - DOCKS - DAY

The party walks onto the Costa Del Sol docks.

BARRET

(BEAT)

What now?

AERIS

How about we take a little vacation?

CLOUD

We don’t have time. We should be going after Sephiroth.

TIFA

Come on Cloud. We haven’t eaten or slept in a real bed since the inn in Junon.

CLOUD

You guys want a vacation? Fine. I’m going on ahead.

Cloud walks on ahead. A beat; then

BARRET

Whoa, wait.

Cloud stops.

BARRET

(CONT.)

What about Yuffie? What are we going to do with her?

CLOUD

(to Yuffie)

You promise to behave?

YUFFIE

I’ll behave.

CLOUD

Alright then.

He continues walking on ahead.

BARRET

That’s it!? We’re just going to leave her!?

Cloud ignores him and keeps walking.

YUFFIE

I’m going with you guys.

BARRET

Whoa. No you aren’t.

YUFFIE

Yes I am.

BARRET

No you aren’t.

YUFFIE

Yes I am.

TIFA

(to Aeris)

Just like children.

Aeris giggles.

BARRET

Fine! You want to come with us then do it! But stay the hell away from me.

YUFFIE

Fine.

BARRET

Fine.

Barret walks after Cloud.

TIFA

Let’s go, Yuffie.

Tifa and Aeris start to follow Barret and Cloud.

YUFFIE

Wait, I never got your names.

TIFA

I’m Tifa.

AERIS

And I’m Aeris.

TIFA

Now you know.

YUFFIE

Nice to meet you!

Yuffie runs to catch up with the group.

FADE OUT

FADE IN

INT. COREL - BARRET’S HOME - DAY - FLASHBACK

Barret is getting dressed. His wife is now awake and walks to him. She puts her arms around him.

MYRNA

So what do you think?

BARRET

‘Bout what?

MYRNA

You know what I’m talking about.

BARRET

If you’re talking about the plans to build a Mako reactor here, we’ve already had this discussion.

MYRNA

The town’s split, Barret. There’s unrest.

BARRET

Dyne has his own opinion.

MYRNA

Yes, and don’t let different opinions ruin your friendship.

BARRET

Dyne and I will always be friends no matter what.

Barret turns around and to look his wife in the eyes. He puts his arms around her.

BARRET

(CONT.)

I’m just sick of working in a coal mine. My whole life I’ve worked in the mine.

MYRNA

What’s so wrong about the mine? Your father worked in one. Your grandfather worked in a coal mine. You’re continuing a legacy.

BARRET

I know. But nobody uses coal anymore. They’ve all converted to Mako.

MYRNA

Just have faith.

They lean in and kiss each other. Suddenly, there are several KNOCKS on the door. Myrna looks through the window and sees Barret’s friend DYNE waiting outside.

MYRNA

Come on in, Dyne. It’s open.

Dyne, a young man with black hair, walks into Barret’s house. Barret goes over to greet him.

BARRET

(shaking Dyne’s hand)

Hey how you doing?

DYNE

I’m good, man. And you?

BARRET

I’m doing alright. You still split over the reactor?

DYNE

(sighing)

Yeah. I’ve tried not to think about it.

BARRET

Well let’s put it out of minds for now.

DYNE

That’s what I just said I was trying to do.

Barret looks at his watch.

BARRET

We’ve got to get going.

(to his wife)

Love you.

MYRNA

Love you, too.

DYNE

See you later, Mrs. Wallace.

MYRNA

Bye, Dyne.

Dyne and Barret leave.

EXT. COSTA DEL SOL - MAIN STREET - DAY

The party all walk down the streets of Costa Del Sol.

AERIS

So what should we do first?

CLOUD

We should be going after Sephiroth.

AERIS

Come on Cloud, lighten up.

TIFA

She’s right. We could use a break from all this.

CLOUD

We don’t have time.

AERIS

Then where are we going?

CLOUD

I don’t know. The nearest place is Mount Corel.

TIFA

Mount Corel?

(to Barret)

Isn’t that where you’re from?

BARRET

Yeah.

TIFA

Great. We can stop there.

BARRET

No!

Barret stops walking.

CLOUD

What are you doing?

BARRET

I’m gonna hit the bar.

He walks off toward a building with the sign “Costa Del Sol Pub” on it.

TIFA

What’d I say?

CLOUD

How should I know? I wasn’t listening.

RED XIII

If you ask me, the gentleman’s hiding something.

CLOUD

Who isn’t, these days?

YUFFIE

Should I go try and cheer him up?

CLOUD

I think that’s the last thing he wants, especially from you.

A few beats; then

CLOUD

(CONT.)

Fine I suppose we can rest here a day or two.

AERIS

Yes! I’m going to do some swimming. Want to join me, Red?

RED XIII

I think it’s better if I stay indoors. This heat is drying out my nose.

AERIS

Suit yourself. What about you Cloud?

CLOUD

No thanks. I’m gonna see what’s up with Barret.

YUFFIE

I’ll go with you, Aeris.

AERIS

Great! Let’s go change.

Aeris and Yuffie run off. Cloud watches them. Suddenly he notices a MAN dressed in black trench coat walking down the path. As he disappears out of view, Cloud’s realizes who it was.

CLOUD

I’ll be damned.

TIFA

What?

CLOUD

Why the hell is he here?

TIFA

He? Cloud, what’s going on?

CLOUD

Hojo’s here.

RED XIII

(angrily excited)

Where!? He and I have unfinished business.

CLOUD

He just walked by. I’m going after him.

RED XIII

I’m going with you.

CLOUD

No!

RED XIII

Why not?

CLOUD

Because you’ll end up killing him, that’s why. I need him alive.

RED XIII

I won’t kill him.

(BEAT)

Yeah I will. Alright go after him. I resist the urge to follow you.

CLOUD

Good.

TIFA

How do we know you won’t kill him?

CLOUD

You don’t.

He smiles and goes after Hojo. A beat; then

TIFA

Come on. Let’s go join Barret in the bar.

They start walking toward the bar.

RED XIII

You think they’ll be kind enough to pour some drinks in a bowl for me?

Tifa giggles.

EXT. COSTA DEL SOL - SIDEWALKS - DAY

Stealthy, Cloud follows Hojo down the sidewalks. He watches as he turns into an alley way. Cloud follows.

INT. COSTA DEL SOL - PUB - DAY

Barret, depressed, sits at the bar.

BARTENDER

What can I ya’, big fella?

BARRET

A shot of whiskey’ll do.

The BARTENDER nods and grabs a bottle of whiskey. He pours a shot and slides it to Barret.

BARTENDER

Here you go.

BARRET

Thanks.

He downs the shot. Tifa and Red XIII see Barret and walk toward him.

TIFA

Barret?

BARRET

What do you want?

TIFA

Did I offend you or something? If I did, I’m sorry.

BARRET

No, no. You didn’t offend me. I just can’t go back to Corel.

Tifa sits on the stool next to him.

RED XIII

While you’re up there, order me a drink.

TIFA

I don’t think so.

(to Barret)

Why can’t you go back home?

BARRET

Long story.

TIFA

We’ve got time.

BARRET

I can’t go back because I’ve been branded a traitor by my own people.

TIFA

Why?

BARRET

I really don’t want to talk about it.

(to bartender)

I’ll take another shot.

EXT. COSTA DEL SOL - ALLEY - DAY

Cloud continues to follow Hojo. He gains on him and then BOOM! Cloud slams him into the side of a building.

CLOUD

(jokingly)

How you doin’ Hojo?

He PUNCHES him hard in the face knocking off his glasses.

HOJO

(looking up at Cloud)

You!

CLOUD

(choking Hojo)

That’s right, asshole. Me! What are you doing here?

HOJO

I came for a tan.

CLOUD

Bullshit.

WHAM! Cloud knees Hojo in the gut. He falls to his knees.

CLOUD

Now answer the question! Why are you here?

HOJO

You and I have the same goal.

CLOUD

Talking about Sephiroth?

Hojo laughs and spits out some blood.

HOJO

(standing up)

You saw him didn’t you?

Cloud doesn’t answer.

HOJO

I see what’s going on.

He picks up his glasses and laughs.

CLOUD

What’s so funny?

HOJO

Nothing.

(BEAT)

I just remembered a certain hypothesis. Haven’t you ever had a feeling like something’s calling you? Or that you just had to visit some random place?

CLOUD

I’ll follow Sephiroth anywhere.

HOJO

Who said I was talking about Sephiroth?

CLOUD

I’m going to find Sephiroth and end all of this!

HOJO

We’ll see.

Hojo stops and walks out onto --

EXT. COSTA DEL SOL - BEACH - DAY

CLOUD (OS)

Stop! I’m not finished!

Hojo ignores him and keeps walking. BAM! Cloud tackles his waist and throws Hojo to the ground.

CLOUD

I said I wasn’t done!

Cloud begins to pull out his sword.

HOJO

You’re going to kill me? In front of everyone?

He looks around and sees innocent families and children on the beach. Cloud lets go of his sword.

HOJO

I didn’t think so.

AERIS (OS)

Cloud!

He turns and sees Aeris and Yuffie running toward him.

CLOUD

Aeris, what are you doing here?

AERIS

Yuffie and I were gonna go for a swim.

She looks down and sees Hojo. She JUMPS.

AERIS

(angry)

What’s he doing here?

HOJO

Ah, my precious specimen.

Hojo stands up.

AERIS

I am not your specimen.

YUFFIE

Who’s this?

HOJO

The name’s Hojo. I’m head of Shinra’s Science Department.

AERIS

He’s also insane.

Hojo laughs.

HOJO

Tell me ‘Ancient’, how’s your mother Iflana?

AERIS

She’s dead.

HOJO

I see. What about that other mother of yours, Elmyra?

AERIS

She’s in Midgar.

CLOUD

(breaking the subject)

Hojo, what about Sephiroth? He says he’s an Ancient. He says Jenova’s an Ancient, too. Are they? Do Aeris and those two share the same blood?

Hojo laughs.

HOJO

Blind as a bat.

He starts to walk away.

AERIS

Hey!

CLOUD

Let him go. We’ll get our chance at him again.

Aeris sighs.

YUFFIE

Can we go swimming now?

CLOUD

Go ahead.

YUFFIE

Finally.

Yuffie walks toward the water.

CLOUD

I still got to keep my eye on her. For some reason I still don’t trust her.

AERIS

You’re too hard on her. She was only doing her job when she robbed us.

A few beats; then

CLOUD

Aeris, there’s something you need to know.

AERIS

What?

CLOUD

I thought you already knew. It’s about Elmyra.

AERIS

What happened?

Cloud stops.

CLOUD

Nothing. She’s safe.

AERIS

Are you sure? You sounded pretty serious.

CLOUD

Really, she’s okay.

AERIS

Good.

CLOUD

Go have fun.

Aeris smiles and goes to join Yuffie in the water.

FADE OUT

FADE IN

EXT. MT. COREL - OUTSIDE MINE 1 - DAY - FLASHBACK

Dyne and Barret, both wearing hardhats, appear from inside the mine. They walk out with their faces charred from coal.

DYNE

I need a fuckin’ break.

BARRET

Everybody does from time to time.

Dyne takes off his helmet and throws it in an empty mine cart. He walks over to the pump and pumps water to wash himself.

DYNE

(washing his face)

This mine stuff…it’s hard.

BARRET

If they build a Mako reactor here it won’t be.

Dyne finishes and wipes his face.

DYNE

I never said I don’t enjoy working the mine. It’s the best feeling.

BARRET

Just imagine how easier our lives would be once a reactor is here.

DYNE

We don’t need one. This town’s doing just fine.

BARRET

Now it’s doing fine. What about ten years from now? The world won’t run on coal. Everything’s going Mako.

DYNE

I don’t want no Shinra in my town. Once a reactor’s built, we’ll Shinra on our asses, day in and day out.

BARRET

I’m not gonna deny that Shinra can be untrustworthy. But if they have a way to keep this town alive, I’ll go with it.

DYNE

You don’t any kids to worry about though.

BARRET

I have a wife to provide for though.

DYNE

Right and Myrna is great woman. Eleanor and I have a newborn daughter we have to worry about.

BARRET

How is Marlene doing?

DYNE

She’s adorable, but gets on my fuckin’ nerves. I couldn’t get a minute of sleep last night with the crying. It’s torture!

Barret laughs.

DYNE

Don’t get me wrong. I love Marlene.

BARRET

Yeah I know. Besides, that crying period is only supposed to last a month or so.

DYNE

I just don’t want my daughter raised around backstabbing scum like Shinra.

BARRET

Just because they build a reactor here doesn’t mean this town’s gonna become a nest for its army.

DYNE

Yeah it does.

BARRET

In your mind.

FORMAN (OS)

Break’s over! Back to work gentlemen.

DYNE

You heard the man.

BARRET

Work. It’s the only thing that drives us.

INT. COSTA DEL SOL - PUB - DAY

Barret is still at the bar. He looks like shit and is piss drunk.

BARRET

(to bartender)

I’ll take another one.

BARTENDER

Sorry. I can’t serve you anymore shots.

BARRET

What? Why?

BARTENDER

You’ve had enough.

BARRET

I’m a paying customer.

RED XIII

The guy’s right, Barret. You can’t just drink your problems away.

BARRET

What are you talking about? Yeah you can.

Tifa walks out from the bathroom. Meanwhile, Barret stands up and staggers.

BARRET

Just give me one more.

BARTENDER

No can do.

Tifa grabs Barret’s arm.

TIFA

It’s time to go.

BARRET

I just wanted a drink.

BOOM! Barret passes out and falls to the ground.

TIFA

Aw shit.

BARTENDER

He’ll be alright.

TIFA

No, it’s just how the hell am I going to move him. He weighs like 250 pounds.

She looks at Red XIII.

RED XIII

Yet another task you need another human for.

TIFA

We’ve got to get him to the inn.

INT. COSTA DEL SOL INN - ROOM - DAY

Red XIII opens the door with his head and the bartender and Tifa drag Barret in the room. They drag him to the middle of the room.

BARTENDER

What’s that on his hand?

TIFA

He lost his hand years ago.

BARTENDER

Yes, but what’s that where his hand should be?

TIFA

It’s nothing. Thanks for the help.

BARTENDER

Secrets, eh? Fine with me.

TIFA

Do we owe you for the help or anything?

BARTENDER

Nah. Your unconscious buddy paid more than enough.

The bartender leaves. Tifa shuts the door.

RED XIII

We’re just going to leave him here?

TIFA

Just until he wakes up.

(BEAT)

Grab a pillow would ya’?

Red walks over to bed and grabs a pillow with his teeth. Tifa takes it and puts it under Barret’s head.

RED XIII

I’m going to get some rest.

Red XIII jumps up onto the bed and lies down. Tifa goes to a chair and sits down.

INT. SHINRA TOWER - CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY

REEVE is escorted into the conference room in Shinra Tower, by two Shinra soldiers.

REEVE

Where’s Rufus?

The soldiers are silent.

REEVE

He said he wanted to talk with me right?

BAM! One of the soldiers rams the butt of his rifle into Reeve’s gut. Reeve falls to the floor.

SHINRA SOLDIER #22

No hard feelings Reeve. We’re just following orders.

The soldier nods to the other one. The second soldier punches Reeve hard in the face five times.

SHINRA SOLDIER #22

We apologize. We’re just doing what Rufus ordered.

REEVE

You’re going to kill me?

SHINRA SOLDIER #22

No. Rufus does want to talk to you. He’ll be here in a few hours.

INT. COSTA DEL SOL INN - ROOM - DUSK

The door opens and Cloud enters he sees Barret on the ground.

CLOUD

What’s with him?

TIFA

He got drunk. For some reason he doesn’t want to talk about his home.

CLOUD

Why all the sudden now?

TIFA

He’s from Mount Corel, which is where you said we’re going.

Cloud takes out his sword and leans it up against the wall.

TIFA

What’d you get from Hojo?

CLOUD

Nothing much. He knows more than he says he does.

RED XIII

(over hearing the conversation)

Then why didn’t you just kill him?

CLOUD

I thought you were asleep.

Red XIII opens his eyes and props his head up.

RED XIII

I was.

CLOUD

Are Aeris and Yuffie back yet?

TIFA

If they are they haven’t stopped in.

CLOUD

(worried)

I knew I shouldn’t have trusted her.

TIFA

You think Yuffie did something?

CLOUD

I don’t know what I think these days anymore.

(BEAT)

I’m going to get her. Stay here.

Cloud walks to the door and opens it. Just as he opens it, he sees Aeris and Yuffie standing out side. Aeris has her fist raised like she was ready to knock. Cloud lets out a sigh of relief.

AERIS

You’re that happy to see me?

CLOUD

You’ve been gone awhile. I was beginning to think that Yuffie tried something.

YUFFIE

I never break an oath.

CLOUD

That remains to be seen.

(BEAT)

Now come on in.

Aeris and Yuffie walk in the room. They see Barret sleeping on the floor.

AERIS

What―

CLOUD

(interrupting)

Don’t ask.

TIFA

He got drunk and passed out. He’s sleeping now.

CLOUD

You all should join him. Sorry, but vacation’s over. Tomorrow we leave for Mount Corel.

YUFFIE

Why there?

CLOUD

I asked around town, and it appears that a man in a black cloak was seen walking leaving town. He was heading toward Corel.

AERIS

Chasing the bad guy again? When will it stop?

CLOUD

Once I find him.

A few beats; then

YUFFIE

I never got your name.

CLOUD

Cloud.

INT. COSTA DEL SOL INN - ROOM - NIGHT

It is now night. Everyone is asleep except Cloud. He sits in the large window frame at stares at the sky. Meanwhile Barret has drifted into his subconscious and begins to dream.

INT. BARRET’S HOUSE - DREAM SEQUENCE

Barret stands in a burnt charred building that used to be his home. Confused he looks to the window and sees Cloud staring at him.

DYNE (OS)

Long time, buddy.

He looks and sees Dyne standing in front of him.

BARRET

Dyne.

Dyne looks like hell. His face and body are bruised and his left hand is torn to shreds.

BARRET

(CONT.)

What happened to you?

DYNE

You mean you don’t remember?

BARRET

(BEAT)

Yeah, I do remember.

DYNE

Then why’d you do it?

BARRET

It wasn’t my fault.

Dyne laughs.

DYNE

Always blaming someone else. Typical.

BARRET

(looking at Dyne’s mutilated hand)

I’m sorry.

DYNE

(lifting his hand up and looking at it)

Oh this? Look at yours.

Barret looks at his right hand. He GASPS when he sees his gun-arm missing. In its place is his human hand. Like Dyne’s, it is mutilated.

BARRET

What’s going on!?

Barret looks down at his hand and then back up at Dyne. Dyne has changed into his wife Myrna.

BARRET

Myrna?

MYRNA

(with Dyne’s voice)

You killed us.

(BEAT)

All of us.

BARRET

No.

Barret looks to a burnt chair off to the left. There Scarlet of Shinra is sitting smoking a cigar. She LAUGHS hysterically. Barret looks back at Myrna. Again the entity has changed. This time into Tifa.

TIFA

(with Dyne’s voice)

You know it’ll happen again.

BARRET

No!

TIFA

You’ll kill us all!

Frightened, Barret looks to the window. Cloud is still there and continues to stare at him.

BARRET

Cloud! Help me!

Cloud stands there outside the window motionless.

DYNE (OS)

History repeats itself, Barret.

Barret looks back over to the entity in front of him. It has changed back to Dyne.

DYNE

(CONT.)

I was your best friend.

BARRET

You still are.

DYNE

No! You are a traitor!

INT. COSTA DEL SOL INN - ROOM - NIGHT

Barret opens his eyes. He looks around and sees that Cloud is the only one awake.

CLOUD

(whispering)

Feeling any better?

Barret sits up.

BARRET

(whispering)

I don’t know…fuckin’ dreams though.

CLOUD

(whispering)

Welcome to my world.

(BEAT)

Get some sleep. We have a long road ahead of us.

BARRET

Yeah.

Barret gets on all fours and crawls to an empty bed. He unscrews his gun-arm and lets it fall to the ground. His eyes shut and he falls asleep.

EXT. MT. COREL - OUTSIDE TOWN - DAY - FLASHBACK

The town [COREL] MAYOR walks up the rocky path with PRESIDENT SHINRA, who is being guarded by four SHINRA SOLDIERS.

VILLAGE HEADMAN

We’re grateful you’ve decided to come visit the town, Mr. President.

PRESIDENT SHINRA

A smart man always checks over before investing.

VILLAGE HEADMAN

I must bring something to your attention, sir.

PRESIDENT SHINRA

What is it?

VILLAGE HEADMAN

Many people in the town, including myself are very skeptical about Shinra building a Mako Reactor here.

PRESIDENT SHINRA

I understand your concern.

VILLAGE HEADMAN

We’re a coal mining town, and happy one at that.

They stop walking. President Shinra turns to face the mayor.

PRESIDENT SHINRA

We’ve detected high Mako concentration right here. Using coal as a fossil fuel is a tradition that is fading. Imagine how much more income your town would bring once we build the reactor.

VILLAGE HEADMAN

Yes, but we’ve heard stories. Stories about a faulty reactor that exploded killing a ton of people at Gongaga.

PRESIDENT SHINRA

Those are just that…stories, false ones at that. Stories that were surfaced by anti-Shinra organizations.

VILLAGE HEADMAN

(BEAT)

How much income will Mako bring?

PRESIDENT SHINRA

Mount Corel will get 10% of everything this reactor sells. It may seem low, but it’s ten times the amount your coal brings in.

BARRET (OS)

Excuse me, sir.

The two look and see Barret running toward them. The soldiers frisk him quickly and let him pass.

PRESIDENT SHINRA

Who is this, mayor?

BARRET

(shaking hands with the president)

Barret Wallace.

VILLAGE HEADMAN

He’s been one of the biggest supporters of the reactor idea.

President Shinra smiles.

PRESIDENT SHINRA

You see, Mr. Mayor. Your own town is starting to agree with me.

BARRET

I just wanted to catch you before you left.

PRESIDENT SHINRA

It’s always nice to meet one of my supporters.

BARRET

Thank you sir. When can we expect construction to begin?

VILLAGE HEADMAN

He has to get the entire town’s approval first.

PRESIDENT SHINRA

If that’s the case, mayor. I will let your town debate it some more. I’ll send a representative when you’re done.

VILLAGE HEADMAN

Who can we expect?

PRESIDENT SHINRA

A woman named, Scarlet.

BARRET

I look forward to it.

PRESIDENT SHINRA

Alright then. I’ll send her out in a week or so. But now I must depart.

VILLAGE HEADMAN

Thank you for coming by, Mr. President.

BARRET

Tell your son, Rufus, ‘congratulations’ on the promotion to vice president.

PRESIDENT SHINRA

He’ll appreciate that.

EXT. OPEN WORLD - MT. COREL PATH - DAY

The group has left Costa Del Sol, and starts to walk up a somewhat rocky path on the open world.

YUFFIE

Did we have to leave Costa Del Sol so soon? It’s the only real vacation I’ve had in years.

BARRET

(angry)

Yeah I’m sure you never get vacations hiding in the woods and stealing from innocent people.

YUFFIE

What’s your problem?

BARRET

My fuckin’ problem is that you’re here.

YUFFIE

Take it easy!

BARRET

We should have just killed you back at Junon.

TIFA

Barret!

Barret spits in Yuffie’s direction and walks ahead of everyone else.

AERIS

What’s up with him?

TIFA

We’re coming up on where he lived before Midgar.

AERIS

Is that bad?

TIFA

I don’t know, but it’s gotten him all worked up.

RED XIII

I knew he was hiding something.

TIFA

Everyone hides things.

(to Cloud)

Right?

CLOUD

Sure.

EXT. OPEN WORLD - MT. COREL PATH - (LATER) DAY

Fatigued, the group stops.

AERIS

Can we stop?

CLOUD

What for?

AERIS

I’m tired.

CLOUD

Push through it. It’s not that hard.

AERIS

Easy for you to say. You were in SOLDIER.

She sits on a large rock and rests. Tifa sits next to her. Yuffie collapses on the ground and Red XIII stays standing.

AERIS

Oh by the way, Cloud,

Aeris pulls out the red materia sphere, and holds it to Cloud.

AERIS

(CONT.)

I think this is yours.

Cloud smiles.

CLOUD

Keep it. We may need it again.

RED XIII

Where’s Barret? Shouldn’t he know that we’ve stopped to rest?

CLOUD

I’ll go look.

YUFFIE

Don’t leave us here!

Cloud walks up the rocky path until he sees Barret leaning up against a dead tree. He stares off into space with an angry look on his face.

CLOUD

What’s wrong, Barret?

BARRET

(continuing to look off into space)

We’re coming up on North Corel.

CLOUD

Your home, right?

BARRET

Yeah.

He turns to face Cloud.

BARRET

(CONT.)

Can we go around?

CLOUD

The path leads right through Corel. I don’t see how we can avoid it.

BARRET

(slamming his fist against the tree)

Dammit!

CLOUD

What is so bad about going home?

BARRET

You have no home when your own people have branded you a traitor.

TIFA (OS)

Come on you guys!

BARRET

Our calling card.

Barret and Cloud walk down the path back to the group.

AERIS

Hi’ya Barret.

BARRET

Hi.

CLOUD

We should get going.

The group all gets up and start to follow Cloud. As they walk, they see some railroad tracks.

TIFA

(looking at the tracks)

Are we close?

BARRET

Just keep walking.

CLOUD

Will the tracks lead us to Corel?

Barret, distraught, walks ahead following the tracks.

CLOUD

I guess so.

They follow.

FADE TO

EXT. MT. COREL - RAILROAD TRACKS - DUSK

We watch as the party walks along a set of hilly railroad tracks suspended in the air.

CLOUD

(keeping his balance while walking)

Careful.

AERIS

(looking off to the left)

Huh?

They stop.

CLOUD

What?

AERIS

Look.

The party looks to the mountainside. There they see a Mako Reactor imbedded into the mountain.

TIFA

What’s a reactor doing all the way out here?

RED XIII

I didn’t even know Shinra’s influence had made it this far away from Midgar.

A beat.

BARRET

Can we keep moving?

YUFFIE

Whoa, stop.

Barret sighs and stops.

BARRET

What now?

YUFFIE

That’s a Mako Reactor?

CLOUD

Never seen one before?

YUFFIE

No. My grandfather does his best to keep Shinra out of Wutai.

CLOUD

(BEAT)

Let’s go.

The group progresses forward.

EXT. MT. COREL - RAILROAD CLIFF - DUSK

The party reaches the mountain side with a deep gap. A small railroad bridge connects both sides. Thinking nothing of it, the party progresses, except Barret. A few beats; then Cloud sees Barret looking down into the gap.

CLOUD

Barret?

He doesn’t answer.

CLOUD

(CONT.)

Let’s go. It’ll be night soon.

A beat; then Barret snaps out of it and catches up with the group.

EXT. COREL - STREETS - NIGHT

They enter the town of Corel. There are no buildings. The burnt ruins of buildings are all that’s left. People live in small dirty tents.

AERIS

This is your home?

BARRET

What’s the matter? Not what you expected?

Cloud walks up to a [COREL] CITIZEN, who is lying on the ground asleep.

CLOUD

(waking the man up)

Hey.

As the man wakes up, Barret hides himself behind one of the tents.

COREL CITIZEN #1

(waking up)

Wow. Someone’s actually talking to me.

(BEAT)

What are you? Travelers?

AERIS

That’s right.

COREL CITIZEN #1

All of you?

CLOUD

Yeah.

The man scans everyone. A few beats; then

COREL CITIZEN #1

You looking for someone?

CLOUD

Why do you ask?

COREL CITIZEN #1

Well, a guy in a black cloak passed through here a few hours ago. I figured you’d be looking for him since Corel these days don’t get many visitors.

BARRET

As he overhears the conversation, a MAN [COREL CITIZEN #2] emerges from the tent Barret is hiding behind. He walks up behind Barret.

COREL CITIZEN #2

(looking at Barret’s back)

Excuse me, is there a reason you’re standing by my home?

Barret turns around to face the man. The man’s face lights up with both anger and shock.

COREL CITIZEN #2

I’ll be damned.

BARRET

(hesitant)

Hi.

BAM! The man punches Barret hard in the face.

CLOUD

The party and the man lying on the ground hear the punch. Tifa and Yuffie run to the tent. They see the man continuing to punch Barret.

TIFA

What the hell are you doing!

The man ignores Tifa and pounds away at Barret. Ashamed, Barret takes the blows. Finally Tifa runs forward. POW! She punches the man hard in the face. He fights back and a small fist fight begins.*

Meanwhile Yuffie helps Barret, who is now bruised and bloody, up.

YUFFIE

You alright?

The rest of the party and the man walk onto the scene. Aeris pulls Tifa away from the man who was fighting Barret.

CLOUD

What the hell’s going on here?

Aeris restrains Tifa. The man she was beating on starts to recover.

AERIS

(to Tifa)

Take it easy.

The first citizen sees that Barret’s there.

COREL CITIZEN #1

(cocky and angry)

I never thought you’d have the balls to come here again.

BARRET

This is my home!

COREL CITIZEN #1

This place was your home. Now it’s a garbage heap.

COREL CITIZEN #2

(regaining his focus and calmly down)

These your friends, traitor?

Little missy there packs quite a punch.

TIFA

Don’t touch one of my friends again.

COREL CITIZEN #2

(about Barret)

You’re friends with this guy!? He’s a walking death sentence.

AERIS

He’s also a good man.

COREL CITIZEN #2

Who the hell are you?

CLOUD

Everyone just shut up! I didn’t come here for this.

COREL CITIZEN #1

Just passing by then?

CLOUD

That’s right. We’re chasing someone. We have been for the past week.

(BEAT)

That man in the black cloak you said you saw, which way was he headed?

COREL CITIZEN #1

Why should I help you?

YUFFIE

Why shouldn’t you?

COREL CITIZEN #1

Because in essence, I’d be helping that piece of shit Barret.

The two citizens start to walk away from the party.

BARRET

Listen, I’m sorry.

One of the citizens [#2] stops. He turns around and angrily walks toward Barret.

COREL CITIZEN #2

You’re sorry? Look at what happened to this place. It was your fault.

BARRET

I know. I said I’m sorry.

COREL CITIZEN #2

That won’t undo the damage you’ve already done.

Barret sighs heavily, and the man walks away.

TIFA

What do we do now?

CLOUD

I didn’t come here to get shut out by these pricks.

BARRET

These pricks are the people I lived with.

TIFA

We have no idea where Sephiroth is going.

AERIS

What about Gold Saucer?

(BEAT)

Isn’t the rail car leading to Gold Saucer supposed to be here? I heard it was.

CLOUD

Why would Sephiroth be in a place like Gold Saucer?

The group starts walking down the streets of Corel. As they walk, townspeople realize Barret and stare at him in anger.

RED XIII

Pardon my asking, but what is Gold Saucer?

CLOUD

It’s a huge amusement park in the middle of the desert.

RED XIII

An amusement park in the middle of the desert? Rather odd, don’t you say?

CLOUD

It’s the one place where people can go and be let go of their worries.

TIFA

Doesn’t sound like a place where a guy like Sephiroth would go.

CLOUD

Exactly.

AERIS

Shouldn’t we check anyways?

CLOUD

We wouldn’t have much luck. The place is huge.

They notice that all the sudden Barret is missing.

TIFA

Where’s Barret?

They look and see Barret walking toward a black charred house. They follow him inside.

INT. COREL - BARRET’S HOME - NIGHT

The ground walks through the burnt house and into the living room where they see Barret standing.

TIFA

Barret?

Barret grabs a burnt picture of his wife from the floor. A tear forms in his eye.

BARRET

There’s nothing but pain wherever I go.

AERIS

That’s why we fight. To make the world a better place.

BARRET

(letting the picture fall to the ground)

Illusions!

Barret stumbles over to a chair and sits down.

TIFA

Barret, what happened here? Why does everyone hate you?

A few beats; then

BARRET

(uneasy)

Four years ago, I lived here. It was a small coal mining town, which was what I did for a living. Then one day Shinra came in with a plan.

(MORE)

BARRET

It seems that there was some Mako under the crust right by our town. They proposed that a reactor be built. Of course they needed our permission.

AERIS

So you opposed them?

BARRET

No. Quite the opposite, in fact. I supported the idea.

TIFA

You? But you hate Shinra?

BARRET

Now I do, sure. But back then I was sick of working in the same boring coal mine everyday and making no money doing so.

(BEAT)

I had gotten the whole town to side with me on the plan except one. My best friend Dyne.

(BEAT)

We had a meeting to discuss the plan and make a final decision. President Shinra had sent Scarlet there representing him.

INT. COREL - BARRET’S HOME - DAY - FLASHBACK

Many of the townspeople of Corel pack into Barret’s living room. Among them are SCARLET, DYNE, and the VILLAGE HEADMAN. They are gathered for the meeting.

VILLAGE HEADMAN

We’ve all decided. Everyone in town is in favor of a reactor being built.

A beat;

VILLAGE HEADMAN

(CONT.)

Everyone except you, Dyne.

They all look at Dyne, who sits uneasy.

DYNE

I’m definitely against it. I always will be. There’s nothing to talk about if you’re thinking of throwing away our coal! Corel’s coal has been protection for generations. Our fathers, and theirs before them, risked their lives for it. We have no right to throw it all away so easily.

BARRET

But Dyne, nobody uses coal anymore. It’s pointless to keep it around. The town will die if we don’t join the rest of the world.

SCARLET

He’s right. Everything and everyone uses Mako now. Don’t worry. Shinra Inc. will guarantee your livelihood once the Mako Reactor is completed.

DYNE

Financially yes, but this isn’t about money. This is about preserving the past.

BARRET

We understand, Dyne. I feel the same way, but I don’t my wife, Myrna, to suffer anymore. Corel is losing money, fast.

SCARLET

He’s right. In ten years Corel will become a slum if you don’t join the rest of the world.

Dyne stands up, angry.

DYNE

I know how you feel, Barret! Damn, I feel the same way. Day after day Eleanor and I struggle over money. But even so, I won’t give away any of our coal mines.

VILLAGE HEADMAN

Dyne, you’ve got to listen to reason.

Dyne’s head drops and sighs heavily.

INT. COREL - BARRET’S HOME - NIGHT

BARRET

That moment, he gave in.

TIFA

So Shinra was finally allowed to build that reactor we saw.

BARRET

Yeah.

AERIS

What happened to Dyne?

FADE TO

INT. COREL - DYNE’S HOUSE - NIGHT - FLASHBACK

Dyne leans on his newly born daughter’s crib. He watches as she sleeps. The infant inside is MARLENE [BABY].

BARRET (VO)

Everyone could tell Dyne was disappointed. I guess he felt betrayed. I couldn’t bear to see my friend like that. So, that night I went to see him.

Dyne’s wife, ELEANOR, and Barret walk in the room. Dyne glances over and then back to his daughter.

ELEANOR

Dyne, Barret’s here.

DYNE

(still looking at Marlene)

I can see that.

Barret moves in and leans on the crib next to Dyne.

BARRET

(looking at Marlene)

She really is beautiful.

DYNE

I know.

A few beats; then

ELEANOR

Barret, can I get you anything? Coffee?

BARRET

(looking back at Eleanor)

No thanks.

Dyne reaches in the crib with his index finger pointed. Gently, he rubs his finger against Marlene’s small hand. Both Barret and Eleanor watch in silence as Dyne positions his finger against Marlene’s palm. In her sleep, Marlene squeezes her father’s finger. Dyne drops his head.

ELEANOR

(comforting)

Dyne. This isn’t the end.

DYNE

(lifting his head up)

I had vision for Marlene when she was born.

He pulls his finger out of the crib.

DYNE

(CONT.)

I knew the world she was going to be raised in. That world is Corel. It’s all we I need…all we need. Now we’ll be poised by outside corporate scum like Shinra. The world I thought was perfect for Marlene will become a military infested slum with corruption and greed.

BARRET

You don’t know that. This reactor is a blessing.

ELEANOR

I agree with him, Dyne.

Dyne looks up at his wife.

DYNE

Now you too?

ELEANOR

Sometimes, we have to let go of the past and rebuild for a brighter future. Let’s raise Marlene in the bright future not the past.

Barret nods.

DYNE

I’ve worked in a coal mine since I was thirteen. I’m living a legacy that has been passed down for hundreds of generations, since the fall of the Cetra. Now people like Shinra are telling me to just throw it all away.

BARRET

Preserve it. Don’t throw it away.

DYNE

Think logically! Shinra’ll destroy the mines when the reactor’s built. You know it.

Eleanor and Barret sigh.

BARRET

I’m feeling the same things you are. I’m the biggest supporter of the plan, but I’m still not one hundred percent sold on the idea. I still worry for Myrna. But I do have confidence that Corel will pull through.

(BEAT)

Not only that, but we’ll be an even better town than before.

Dyne again looks at Marlene, who still sleeps.

DYNE

I trust you, Barret. I trust we’re doing the right thing.

Barret smiles and pats Dyne on the back.

INT. COREL - BARRET’S HOME - NIGHT

AERIS

That’s so sad.

RED XIII

Sounded quite beautiful to me.

AERIS

No, I mean the outcome. Everything really didn’t work out. Just look at this place.

BARRET

Right. I was wrong in supporting that damn reactor plan.

Barret drops his head.

BARRET

(CONT.)

If only I knew what kind of people Shinra were.

CLOUD

The great mystery of life.

Barret looks up.

CLOUD

(CONT.)

It’s filled with ‘ifs’. All you can do is ride the train wherever the rails take you.

TIFA

He’s right. You shouldn’t blame yourself, Barret.

BARRET

Try living through it. The guilt has been killing me these past four years.

A few beats; then

AERIS

So what happened?

BARRET

Shinra began construction on the reactor. It only took a few months. Dyne and I were finishing blowing all the mines when it happened.

YUFFIE

What happened?

BARRET

There was an explosion.

TRANSITION TO

EXT. MT. COREL - OUTSIDE MINE 2 - DAY - FLASHBACK

BAM! The dynamite explodes and the mine caves in. Dyne and Barret operate the explosives.

BARRET

That’ll do it.

DYNE

That’s all of ‘em then?

BARRET

Yep. We’ve just closed a chapter of the book.

A few beats; then BOOM! Another explosion rings in their ears. They turn around and see a huge cloud of black smoke off in the distance.

DYNE

Shit, what just happened?

Barret scans the cloud and how far away it is.

BARRET

It’s coming from the reactor!

DYNE

I told you! Faulty reactors!

Barret runs toward Corel followed by Dyne.

EXT. COREL - STREETS - (LATER THAT) DAY

The streets fill with SHINRA SOLDIERS. They gather people up violently. Among the mayhem is Scarlet speaking on a phone.

SCARLET

(on the phone)

Sir, it was an explosion.

PRESIDENT SHINRA (VO)

Where?

SCARLET

Near the reactor.

PRESIDENT SHINRA (VO)

Was it damaged?

SCARLET

Negative. It is still intact and fully functional.

PRESIDENT SHINRA (VO)

What caused the blast?

SCARLET

It wasn’t the reactor! I’ve concluded it was rebel group in the town of Corel.

A beat;

PRESIDENT SHINRA (VO)

Well, punish them for it.

SCARLET

Yes sir.

She hangs up and calls a CAPTAIN over. Silently she whispers an order in his ear. The captain nods.

EXT. MT. COREL - RAILROADS - DAY - FLASHBACK

Barret and Dyne rapidly run toward town. Running toward them, they see, a COREL BOY. He is somewhat burned and crying.

COREL BOY

Barret! Dyne!

They stop to speak with the boy.

BARRET

What? What’s going on?

COREL BOY

Make them stop!

DYNE

Make who stop? What’s going on?

COREL BOY

The town! It’s on fire!

DYNE

Shit! It has to be Shinra.

BARRET

Myrna. We have to get there!

(to the boy)

You stay right there. We’ll be back.

Barret and Dyne get up and continue running into town.

EXT. COREL - STREETS - FLASHBACK

Barret and Dyne reach Corel. The entire town is engulfed in flames and Shinra soldiers appear to be retreating.

DYNE

(seeing the soldiers)

Those sons of bitches!

BARRET

Don’t worry about that now! You’ve got to get Eleanor and Marlene out of here.

DYNE

Where are you going?

BARRET

I’m going to get Myrna!

Barret runs off. We follow him as he bursts into his flaming house.

INT. COREL - BARRET’S HOUSE - DAY - FLASHBACK

Shielding his face with his hand, Barret quickly searches the house. He sees Myrna on the ground unconscious.

BARRET

Myrna!

He runs to her and hoists her up. He then carries her out into--

EXT. COREL - STREETS - DAY - FLASHBACK

Barret lays Myrna on the ground. She is badly burned but her face is intact.

BARRET

(shaking Myrna)

Wake up.

(BEAT)

Myrna, wake up.

She lies there motionless and Barret tries to wake her up. Barret maneuvers his hand down to Myrna’s stomach and feels a bullet hole. He looks at his finger and sees blood.

BARRET

No.

He stares at the blood and then SCREAMS in agony. Tears develop in his eyes as he clutches his wife’s head. Suddenly, BOOM! Dyne bursts out of his house. He is holding Marlene, who is crying.

DYNE

Barret!

He runs toward Barret and sees that Myrna is dead.

DYNE

Shit! Is she dead?

Barret nods and looks up at Dyne.

BARRET

Where’s Eleanor?

DYNE

Gone. I couldn’t find her. I have Marlene though. We’ve got to get everyone to a safe place.

Barret wipes away the tears and gets up.

BARRET

I’m sorry.

DYNE

For what?

BARRET

We all should have listened to you.

DYNE

We got no time for that! Let’s go!

Barret, and Dyne with Marlene, run through the streets of Corel looking for survivors.

ELEANOR (OS)

Dyne!

Dyne looks and sees Eleanor perched up against a burning house. He runs to her and kneels down.

DYNE

Eleanor.

ELEANOR

(looking at Marlene)

She’s safe.

He looks down at Marlene and then back to his wife. A beat; then

ELEANOR

Get out of here.

DYNE

Not without you, I won’t leave you here to die.

ELEANOR

I’m already dead.

DYNE

What are you talking about?

ELEANOR

I…I can’t feel my legs. I was crushed by a piece of the ceiling that fell.

Dyne looks at Eleanor’s legs. They are burned and bruised.

DYNE

Barret can carry you.

ELEANOR

Just get Marlene out of here!

SHINRA SOLDIER #22 (OS)

Freeze!

Dyne looks and sees a platoon of Shinra soldiers running toward him.

SHINRA SOLDIER #22

Eliminate the rebel!

Dyne looks down at Eleanor.

ELEANOR

Go.

A beat; then

DYNE

I love you.

BARRET

Hurry! They’re coming!

Dyne gets up and starts running with Barret. He continues to hold Marlene.

ELEANOR

The soldiers stop and gather around Eleanor. She stares them down.

SHINRA SOLDIER #23

She is harmless.

SHINRA SOLDIER #22

We have our orders.

Simultaneously the soldiers aim and FIRE at Eleanor killing her.

DYNE

Dyne hears the GUNSHOTS and turns around. He sees his wife’s body jerk into a lifeless state.

DYNE

Eleanor!

(to Barret)

Here, take her.

Dyne hands Marlene to Barret.

BARRET

Dyne, wait!

Dyne starts to angrily charge the soldiers. Barret stumbles around not knowing what to do. He walks and places Marlene on a soft pile a leaves away from the fire. He then runs to Dyne.

BARRET

Dyne!

BAM! Dyne punches one of the soldiers before they can fire at him. He engages in a fist fight with the platoon*.

Barret runs and joins the battle. After a few seconds all the soldiers are on the ground.

BARRET

We have to get out of here.

DYNE

Where’s Marlene?

BARRET

She’s safe.

BAM! One of the soldiers fire. The shot skims Dyne’s shoulder. He YELPS. Barret pulls Dyne and they start to retreat.

EXT. MT COREL - RAILROAD CLIFF - DAY - FLASHBACK

Barret and Dyne run to the railroad tracks the bridge the gap in the mountain.

DYNE

(out of breath)

We’ve got to get Marlene!

BARRET

I think we lost those soldiers.

DYNE

What if they got her?

SCARLET (OS)

Suspects spotted!

They look up and see Scarlet with the platoon of soldiers.

SCARLET

I knew they were still alive…but not for long.

BARRET

Scarlet! You’ve got to stop this! Why are you murdering innocent people?

SCARLET

Shinra won’t tolerate rebels. It’s obvious your town caused the explosion at the reactor.

DYNE

No, we didn’t! It aint our fault you build faulty reactors!

SCARLET

Enough! Kill them!

The soldiers open FIRE. Dyne and Barret run separate directions. Dyne hides behind the corner of the cliff where as Barret hides on the opposite sides.

DYNE

Barret! Hurry!

Barret attempts to run to Dyne but is forced to retreat due to the bullet fire.

BARRET

Hang on!

SCARLET

(to soldiers)

Forget him! Aim at the other one!

The soldiers focus their fire on Dyne. The bullets dig into the rocky ground. Suddenly CRASH! The ground beneath Dyne collapses and Dyne nearly slides into the deep crevasse. He holds onto the edge.

BARRET

Dyne!

SCARLET

Hold your fire!

The soldiers stop firing and Barret is lured out into the open.

(MORE)

Meanwhile Dyne’s hand slips and begins to fall, but SWOOSH! Barret dives in and grabs Dyne’s left hand with his right. The soldiers aim their weapons.

SCARLET

Hold your fire!

They watch as Dyne attempts to swing his other arm up, but can’t.

BARRET

(struggling)

Hang on! You’re going to make it!

DYNE

I aint lettin’ go.

Barret slowly starts to pull Dyne up. Surprised Scarlet raises her eyebrows.

SCARLET

Just kill them!

The soldiers open fire. The bullets hit the side of the cliff and move toward Barret and Dyne’s hands. BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! A huge barrage of bullets hit their mark and shred Barret’s right hand and Dyne’s left hand. Dyne and Barret SCREAM! And then Dyne falls into the abyss.

INT. COREL - BARRET’S HOME - NIGHT

BARRET

I made it out there a few seconds later.

(BEAT)

From that point on I couldn’t use my right forearm anymore.

CLOUD

I guess that explains the gun-arm.

BARRET

Yeah…

(BEAT)

I went back to town and took Marlene. We fled to Midgar. I raised her knowing Dyne was gone. I became very depressed. I hated Shinra! They killed my wife, my friends, everybody! So one day I threw away my artificial arm got this gun grafted in.

INT. SLUMS - OPERATING ROOM - DAY - FLASHBACK

Barret sits in a chair with his new gun-arm. A SURGEON stands above him.

BARRET

Good work.

SURGEON

Yeah, I’m very proud of my work.

BARRET

(aiming his gun-arm into the air)

How do I use it?

SURGEON

The bullets are triggered by your nerves’ impulses and wrist movement. So lightly move your wrist it’ll fire. The mechanism also has a safety so you don’t accidentally fire.

BARRET

Excellent.

SURGEON

Oddly, you’re not the first one to ask for this operation.

BARRET

Really?

SURGEON

Yeah. Some other guy wanted the same thing. Only his gun was grafted on his left hand.

INT. COREL - BARRET’S HOME - NIGHT

TIFA

You think it was Dyne?

BARRET

I don’t know. It’s a slim chance he survived that fall.

AERIS

What if he is alive? You think he’ll join us?

BARRET

I doubt it. The guy probably hates my guts just like everyone here.

(BEAT)

If he is alive…I have to confront him. I have to make things right. I won’t ever be able to rest in peace until this is settled.

RED XIII

Dyne could very well be dead.

YUFFIE

Hey!

BARRET

No, he’s right.

CLOUD

I don’t like it. Your confrontation will be nothing more than a vendetta. Either you’ll kill him or he’ll kill you.

BARRET

How the hell would you know?

CLOUD

That’s what always happens.

A few beats; then

BARRET

We might as well rest here for tonight.

FADE TO

EXT. COREL - STREETS - DAWN

Everyone in the group except Cloud is waiting on the streets. Cloud stands off to the side silently talking to a [COREL] CITIZEN [#3]. He finishes and walks over to the group.

AERIS

So, what’d he say?

CLOUD

They’ll let us take the railcar up to Gold Saucer. But for a hefty price.

RED XIII

Did you agree?

CLOUD

Yeah. He also said that a man in a black cloak took the car up recently.

TIFA

So he is heading for Gold Saucer.

CLOUD

It appears so.

BARRET

What else did he say?

CLOUD

(hesitant)

Nothing.

BARRET

Tell me.

Cloud sighs.

CLOUD

He said, “The sooner we get Barret’s fat ass out of here the better.”

BARRET

Thought so.

TIFA

(comforting)

Come on, Barret. Let’s just go.

The group starts walking down the streets. They pass a small graveyard. Barret stops and looks at the tombstones. He falls to his knees and starts to weep. The party watches.

PAN ACROSS

We see Dyne, Myrna, Eleanor, and others’ tombstones.

PAN UP and ZOOM IN on

A large slab of rock with this text imbedded in it.

“To all those who fell at the hands of Shinra and its reactor. To all the fathers, mothers, brothers, and sisters, Corel misses you…”
