Fighter/Knight

This is a guy that you must have in your party, in the early parts of the game, he is clearly your best fighter and the only one that can really pull you through the tougher battles. He gains HP pretty damn fast when you do level him up and his attack strength and defense rating are the highest out of any character in the game. A very well-balanced character overall and is capable of being able to equip most weapons and armor that the game has to offer. The only real downfall of this class in general is that the equipment and weaponry is on the expensive side compared to most other classes. Nevertheless, in a tough battle, if things are really going bad, this guy is almost always the last guy standing. A must for anyone.

Thief/Ninja

Not exactly the greatest character around, merely average in my opinion as he isn't really good at anything nor is he terrible, on the other hand. The thief seems to have average HP at best and relatively low defense and mediocre attack power. He can't exactly equip that many things until he gets promoted to a Ninja though. Nevertheless, an average character to put in your party. As a Ninja, he could be used to cast an extra "Haste" on your character, other than the Black Mage but otherwise, black magic is kind of pointless to have for this character. Some may say that he is a fast runner but I haven't really noticed that much of a difference in the first place. So keep in mind, the Thief or Ninja is merely an average character that doesn't exceed at anything, I believe that you would be better off picking a Black belt or Red Mage over this guy.

Blackbelt/Master

A pretty strong character and the real plus is that he is cheaper to shop for in terms of weapons and equipment than just about anyone else in the game. He normally uses his fists in battle and can be really effective when you do multiple hits worth of pretty solid damage as the game wears on and he gets up to Master class. He can wear relatively light armor and yet, his defense rating doesn't seem to affect his performance that much. He can definitely hold his own in terms of defense, despite the fact that he can't really equip the heaviest armor in the game. A very solid all around character and definitely packs a punch. There isn't really too much at fault for this guy in the game.

Red Mage/Wizard

Again, a pretty solid character to put in your party. With the capability to wield both Black and White magic, the Red Mage or Wizard can do the devastating spells that the Black Mage can, but also has the ability to help heal the party if you need it. Not only that, but this character can also equip almost anything in the game and has access to some of the higher armor and weapons available, unlike the other mages in the game. While he can't use lvl 8 black or white magic, he is still a force to be reckoned with. A nice addition to the party, if you are looking for an extra magic user who is well-balanced as well.

White Mage/Wizard

It is pretty obvious that this is a must for any party, if you don't want to waste the early part of the game spending too much on healing items and revive stuff. While she is weak in terms of defense and overall max HP, she makes up for it in the fact that her protective magic and recovery magic will aid any party and is a very nice asset to have. In the tougher battles, such high level magic like Cure3 or maybe even Cure4 could really pull your party out of a tight situation. Not much of an attacker either, she can usually only equip some of the weapons and armor that Final Fantasy has to offer. But if you have common sense, you would know that a White mage can be pretty essential to any party.

Black Mage/Wizard

Maybe not a must to put in your party but still pretty useful in his own right. Like the White mage, he can really only equip a few odd weapons and some of the weaker armor that the game has to offer but he makes up for his pretty low HP in terms of his devastating offensive spells. Many of which are of the elemental quality and can be pretty useful against large groups of enemies as well as certain bosses. Not only that, the Black Wizard has access to some of the most powerful spells in the game so you shouldn't pass up on this one. Then again, if you are only looking for someone who can hack and slash their way to beat the game, then you might want to pass up on this one. Low attack power but still useful in battle as the game wears on.
