PREVIEW

Update (Feb. 10/2004)

There has been some new information released about FFXI as of late.  First of all, sidequests will work differently in FFXI in comparison to past FF games like the fact that NPCs in towns will dole out quests for your character in exchange for a reward.  This is an extra incentive for your character to do them in the first place and goes along well with the whole “exploration” and “adventurous” aspects of the game.  Also revealed is the fact that after you finish a sidequest, more clues and hints will be revealed about the main quest itself.  Another interesting fact about FFXI is that there will be some form of the ever popular “Job System” in FFXI, which will work similar to what FF Tactics and FFV did with the system.  Finally, there is a skill system that is very similar to the import game: Final Fantasy II in which the more often a player uses a particular spell or weapon, the more accurate and powerful it becomes.  So far, FFXI does look promising with some interesting features in the actual gameplay, we’ll report more about the game as it nears it’s upcoming Japanese release.

Final Fantasy XI is a completely online RPG game and it allows gamers from all over the world to play with each other.  FFXI takes place on a world called Vana'diel in which all forms of weaponry and technology co-exist.  However, twenty years have passed since a great war was fought involving those who followed all sources of power in Vana'diel and those who have allied themselves with the forces of evil and darkness.  Even though the forces of darkness destroyed much of the world, the brave warriors who fought in the war were victorious but the memory of the war has faded in the minds of the survivors.  Evil threatens the land once again many years after the great war.

An interesting feature of this game is that you can customize your character's attributes like gender, race, appearance and so on.  There are 3 main races of people to choose from:  Humes, which is a human race with well-rounded abilities, Tartares, who are dwarf-like wizards who are excellent magic-users and Eruvans, who are good at sword techniques and battling.  Each race of people live in different parts of the world with different landscapes from each other.  While FFXI does have it's share of unique online features like chatting and other things, it's still unknown how well FFXI will be perceived by long-time fans of the series as FFXI takes the FF franchise in a bold and new direction.  FFXI is still a while off for release but in the meantime, enjoy some of these new FFXI screenshots till then.  We will update this preview with more info and media as they become available to the public.
