Vaan is a free-roaming street orphan who has a dream of flying the skies and having a sense of adventure. He longs to become a sky pirate.
Vaan is often followed by his childhood friend Penelo. Together, they have lost their family members from war and in Vaan's case of his parents, the plague. Both are orphans and have known each other since they were little. Vaan is the brother of Reks, who is conscripted into the Dalmascan army to fight off the Arcadian invasion.
Character Developments (Spoilers)
Vaan's brother Reks is killed by what appears to be Basch in the storming of Nalbina Fortress and at first does not trust Basch but later on finds out that it wasn't Basch who killed Reks but rather, Judge Gabranth. After the death of Reks, Vaan is determined to stop the Arcadian empire and like Penelo, just wants to restore Dalmasca to the peaceful state it had been before the Arcadians occupied the kingdom.
I don't believe that Vaan is the main character of the storyline at all. He is merely just a side character and the storyline does not focus around him very much. He and Penelo tag along with the Dalmascan resistance with Ashe and company as Dalmasca is their home and they want to fight to protect it from Arcadia. While a few lines of dialogue come off as being carefree, silly and sometimes kind of goofy at first, deep down he wants to avenge the death of his brother Reks and wishes for a sense of adventure. By going with two sky pirates, Fran and Balthier, he begins to realize his dream of becoming one.
