Jobs/Job System

Explanation: The job system in this game is the first applied and unique one. In order to use a job you require a certain SP to use it. SP is gained in battle with EXP. There are no pre-requisites to any job; you could change all your fighter types to mages and vice versa with enough SP. All the sprites look the same, except on map, where they may or may not have a color difference. You must un-equip all items before changing jobs as well.

The Onion Kid. Standard form, and you can throw it away after the first crystal is obtained. He can’t use magic or do much other than be wimpy.

Return of a classic. Fighter is the best for basic level weapon assaults. The only thing better offensive wise off the bat is the Monk. He can’t use magic, but his sword wielding skills are the best.

Speak of the Devil. Don’t bother equipping this guy with more than armour and a helm if you got one. He can’t use magic, but offensive power is basically unmatched.

Woo, the wonders of a Red Mage. He’s not really good, unless you’re looking for a semi-melee fighter. He has a few useful swords and such, but don’t keep him around for long.

You’ll NEED him to survive. Black Mage’s offensive magic comes in handy for the majority of the game, but later he’ll slack as monsters grow more resistant.

You’ll NEED him (yes… him) to win. White Mage’s cure spells are a must to battle tough foes and even when you’re waltzing around gaining levels.

An optional class of fighter. I never used him and he can be useful from fighting in the back I guess. He can also use very low level white magic to my surprise.

Once you get the Knight, get rid of your fighter. He can use high class armor and swords and even has a higher hit rate and such. Plus a fancy new suit to boot! Yay melee fighters! Sadly he still can’t use magic.

Thieves are good for only one thing. Escaping. They suck battle wise, and with no magic, they serve very little purpose. If you’re a midget have a thief, always.

Why bother with Scholars? He’s got magical books and the original version of the scan command. One fight against Hyne is all you need to use him for. He can’t even use magic…

Lali-ho? Or take a nap? Geomancers’ got Terrain magic so to speak, although this class is also basically a garbage job. Heck man, his magic can even backfire on him!? What’s with that?

To my opinion a very useful class. Yet, a very forgotten one. After a battle with Garuda you’ll put away your Dragoon armour for good if you know what’s good for you. Jump attacks are strong however.

Rally-Ho! Yes they are dwarves. But once again a very forgotten job. You don’t want Vikings unless you’re into brute damage with little speed. Personally I’d much rather have a team of Mystic Knights.

Karate Masters are the same as what I said for the Knight class. No idea why you get him later though. HP goes up through the roof with this class, yet nothing really changes from being a Monk.

These dudes absolutely rock. Mystic Knights as I call them can use low level cure magic, and wield Dark Swords. They are the killer of the clone monsters and base of the Ninja class. And don’t get them confused with Dark Knights.

Conjurers are a class I never even touched. Summoned monsters are often poorly used by this guy. I suggest waiting to get the Summoner class and skipping him altogether.

Do I have to tell you about Bards? Heck I can understand why Tellah from FF IV hates Edward so much. Bards completely suck and not worth looking into.

Super Black Mage. Warlocks can use all Black magics and gain more bonuses. The only downside from upgrading is that Warlocks can’t use knives and daggers. Shoot.

Super White Mage. Shamans can use all White magics and gain more bonuses. There is no downside from upgrading to a Shaman. But um… what’s up with the cat hood?

Alrighty! This is the summoner class we all know and love. Bahamut actually uses Mega Flare for this guy! Sadly I avoided using him and saved all my magic for making a Sage.

This guy rules. He can cast something like… Cure 4, then Flare, then Bahamut turn after turn. Two Sages in a party will protect you from ANYTHING. Later on however… is back to hasting the Ninjas, and then Cure 4ing the party.

This guy will make you cry. Equip him with Excalibur and Ragnarok or Masamune. Then you’ll know what I mean. Fast, and deadly, you’ll want two staple Ninjas in your final party. Ninja’s can equip everything except useless Onion Kid trash and Rusted armour (Who wants that stuff on a Ninja anyways?)
