Introduction

Final Fantasy IV was really released in the US as Final Fantasy II as the Japanese gamers managed to get FFII and III on the Nintendo Famicom (NES in North America) which never made it to North American shores unfortunately.  Square decided to test the RPG market in the US again as many North American gamers who played and enjoyed the original Final Fantasy were longing for another epic RPG game in the Final Fantasy series.  After they finally decided to release FFIV (FFII in the U.S.) in North America, many RPG fans in North America finally got their wish and the game proved to be another great effort in the part of Square.  While the game still didn’t get the attention that many of it’s fans believe it deserved, it sold pretty well still in the US and it became clear that Square is number one when it comes to making epic RPGs as the other RPG games during this time were nowhere near as good as the Final Fantasy series with the exception of Dragon Quest.  Square believed that Final Fantasy IV would be too hard for American RPG gamers and they decided to release a watered-down version of FFII (FFIV in Japan) to North America while the Japanese gamers still got the FFIV-hardtype version to their liking.  The majority of RPG fanatics were extremely pleased with FFII and the game had the best character development and storyline out of any RPG game to date and even now, it still manages to hold it’s own against newer FFs.  Continuing on the Crystal concept found in the original story, Square expands on them further as they are now more integral to the storyline and many new themes occur in FFII, which makes FFIV a solid RPG in its own right.  How does FFIV stack up against newer RPGs like Final Fantasy IX and Xenogears?  Well read on the review to find out………

Full Story (Spoilers)

Final Fantasy IV starts off with Dark Knight Cecil, Captain of the Red Wings, an elite group of soldiers sent by King Baron of the Kingdom of Baron to capture all the Crystals by any means necessary. Cecil and the rest of the Red Wings were sent by King Baron to capture the Water Crystal of Mysidia and are forced to murder any innocent beings who get in their way. After returning home to Baron again, Cecil greets King Baron and then gives him the Water Crystal but then King Baron believes that Cecil can’t be trusted as Cecil seems reluctant to follow orders. The King then dismisses Cecil from commanding the Red Wings but Cecil and the Red Wings then tell the King that they are displeased with taking the Crystal. The King then takes away Cecil’s command of the Red Wings and then tells Cecil to kill the Phantom monster in the Mist Valley and to deliver the Bomb Ring to the Mist Village. Kain then goes into the room and then convinces the King to reconsider his decision and then the King tells Kain to go with Cecil to the Mist Valley as Kain is certain that Cecil will be back in command shortly. After talking a bit with Cid, Baron’s chief airship engineer and Rosa, who is Cecil’s childhood friend and love interest, Kain and Cecil then head out to the Mist Valley……..

After exploring the nearby town of Baron for a bit, Kain and Cecil then enter the Mist Valley and after defeating the monsters in the Mist Cave, Cecil and Kain then arrive in the Mist Village but then the Bomb Ring starts to glow and releases a group of Bomb monsters which burns the whole town and it surprises Kain and Cecil. A little girl cries for help and Cecil and Kain then find out that her mother died and Cecil admits that he killed her mother’s dragon. Kain then realizes that the King wants them to eliminate the summoners as well but Cecil and Kain then go against the King’s orders and they decide not to kill the girl. The girl is frightened and summons Titan which destroys the mountainside as well and Cecil wakes up to find the girl lying nearby but Kain is nowhere to be seen. Cecil then decides to take her to the nearby village of Kaipo to help her. After heading to the inn to rest, Cecil and the little girl sleep but they are later on interrupted by a Baron General and he then sends some guards to kill the little girl. Cecil refuses the orders and he then protects the girl from the General and the guards and after defeating them, Cecil and the little girl then goes to sleep for good. The next morning, Cecil explores the village for a bit only to find a very sick Rosa in a building nearby and the man tells Cecil that he needs to find the Sand Ruby to cure her. The little girl then tells Cecil that her name is Rydia and then they both head out to find the Sand Ruby. They enter the Water Cavern and they later on find a mysterious old sage in Tellah and Tellah asks Cecil and Rydia to help save his daughter from an evil bard. Tellah then joins up with Cecil and Rydia and then after going through the cavern, they all head to the nearby Kingdom of Damcyan.

Just upon arriving in Damcyan, Cecil and the others then see the Red Wings bomb the Kingdom and Cecil and the others decide to check out what happened by entering the Kingdom. Some of the survivors tell then tell Cecil and the others that the Red Wings took their Crystal and then later on, Tellah sees his daughter Anna lying on the floor and he sees the bard and then attacks him. Eventually, Anna tells Tellah to stop and the bard, Edward tells Tellah that a man named Golbez led the Red Wings to take the Crystal and that Anna protected him from enemy attack. Tellah gets angry and then swears to get revenge on Golbez on his own and the walks away. Edward then keeps on crying but then Rydia makes him snap out of it and they all decide to venture to get the Sand Ruby using his hovercraft. After heading east, they then manage to reach the Antlion Cave and eventually, they reach the Antlion who has the Sand Ruby. After defeating the Antlion, Cecil and the others head back to Kaipo and Cecil gives Rosa the Sand Ruby and then Rosa tells Cecil that she secretly followed him and that Golbez is the new Captain of the Red Wings appointed by the King himself. She later on tells Cecil and the others that Golbez will go after the next 3 Crystals and Edward tells Rosa that the Fire Crystal of Damcyan is already taken by Golbez. Edward then tells the others that Fabul must be the next target of Golbez but it is blocked by ice at Mt. Hobs and then Rosa asks Rydia if she can cast Fire but sadly, she can’t yet. Rosa joins up with Cecil and the others and then during the night, Edward plays his harp by the water and is attacked by a WaterHag and during the battle, the ghost of Anna cheers him on and then Edward wins the battle. She tells Edward it’s all a dream and then the next day, Cecil and the others head to Mt. Hobs and then Rosa then asks Rydia to cast Fire to melt the ice but Rydia hates Fire as it burned her village. Rydia eventually casts Fire and then eventually, the encounter a monk named Yang fighting some enemies and then Cecil and the others help him out. Cecil and the others warn Yang that Golbez is after the Wind Crystal and they then hurry to Fabul. After arriving in Fabul Castle, Cecil and the others explore a bit and then Yang tells the King that trouble is near and then Cecil, Yand and Edward decide to defend the castle while Rydia and Rosa stay behind. After defeating a few Baron guards, the Red Wings bomb the castle and then several waves of battles later, Yang, Cecil and Edward then retreat to the Crystal room of the castle and then Kain appears. Cecil asks him to fight alongside him like always but then Kain decides to fight against you!

Kain defeats Cecil easily and then Rosa and Rydia enter the room and then Kain seems weak when Rosa appears but then Golbez walks in the room and then easily wipes out Yang and Edward and then Kain takes the Wind Crystal. Rosa wants them to stop but then Golbez kidnaps her and then goes away and Kain follows along as well. Cecil and the others agree that the best way to get Rosa back from Golbez is to sneak into Baron by boat and then the King of Fabul provides Yang and the others with a boat. Later on Cecil tells Yang that they plan on getting an airship from Cid once they reach Baron to catch Golbez and then Yang’s wife encourages them before leaving on their journey. At sea, a whirlpool appears and then Leviathian pops out and then the boat sinks and then Cecil finds out that he’s all alone. Cecil enters the town of Mysidia and all the people there hate Cecil as he stole their Crystal in the beginning of the game and then Cecil finds the town elder and the elder tells Cecil to overcome his dark-self before fighting against Baron. He suggests that Cecil goes to Mt. Ordeals and become a Paladin and then he brings along Palom and Porom, twin mages who will help Cecil along the way.

After arriving at Mt. Ordeals, Palom takes out some flames with Ice Magic and then a scene occurs afterwards in which Rosa is tied up underneath a guillotine type blade and then Golbez summons Milon, one of the four element fiends. Kain doesn’t believe Milon is enough to get rid of Cecil and the others and offers to go after them instead, but Golbez doesn’t like the idea much however. Near the top of the mountain, Cecil and the others find Tellah again and seeks the elite spell Meteo on the mountain to defeat Golbez. Tellah joins up with them and at the top of the mountain, they encounter Milon and then a battle occurs. After defeating him Milon then attacks them from behind and then Cecil and the others finally defeat him for good. Cecil and the others encounter a pillar and Cecil hears the voice of his father and then he ends up fighting his old dark-self. After defeating it, Cecil then becomes a Paladin and is no longer an evil, dark knight anymore and then Tellah learns all his old spells, including Meteo! They all return to Mysidia to tell the elder the great news and then after talking to the elder, he then admits that Palom and Porom were sent as spies just to watch Cecil. The old Mysidian Legend is recited once again and then Tellah demands to find and defeat Golbez and the elder opens up a road to Baron. Palom and Porom decide to tag along and then Cecil and the others head to Baron. They head to the inn nearby and then they find Yang and then Yang orders some guards to get you and after the battle, Cecil and the others fight Yang and then Yang comes to his senses finally. He tells Cecil that Rydia was swallowed by Leviathian and that Edward is now gone and he gives you the Baron Key which allows you to sneak into the castle. After going through a waterway, they all reach Baron Castle and then Cecil and the others enter the castle and then Baigan of the Baron army decides to join Cecil and the others but then betrays then and after defeating him, Cecil and the others find the King and it appears the King is none other than another one of the four elemental fiends, Cagnazzo.

After defeating him, Cecil and the others eventually meet up with Cid and then later on, the walls of the castle try to crush Cecil and the others but then Palom and Porom then sacrifice themselves by turning to stone to save the others. Meanwhile, Golbez is extremely angry at Cecil’s power and Kain suggests making Cecil get the Crystal for him by offering Rosa up for the Crystal and then taking Cecil out in the process. Later on, Cid then offers Cecil and the others the use of his airship, the Enterprise and then Cid joins up with Cecil and the others and then another airship flys by. Kain then tells Cecil to get the Earth Crystal for him if Cecil ever wants Rosa alive again and then Kain leaves. Cecil and the others then travel to Troia and they enter the city of Troia. After exploring through the city for a bit, Cecil and the others then head into nearby Troia Castle. Cecil and the others then manage to find Edward inside the Castle, where Edward is resting his wounds and Edward then gives Cecil the “TwinHarp” which it might help agains the Dark Elf, who has the Earth Crystal. After reaching the Magnetic Cavern, Cecil and the others feel a strange source of Magnetic energy and they eventually encounter the Dark Elf in the Crystal room. After being easily defeated by the Dark Elf, Edward senses that trouble is lurking and he uses the last of his strength to play his harp and the music manages to break the Dark Elf’s magnetic field. Cecil and the others re-equip themselves and then after defeating the Dark Elf, they get the Earth Crystal and return back to Troia Castle again. The clerics in Troia Castle marvel at the return of their Earth Crystal and then Cecil hears the voice of Kain telling him and the others to board the airship again. Kain then tells Cecil and the others to go to the Tower of Zot.

After reaching the Tower, Cecil and the others eventually manage to encounter Kain and Golbez and then Cecil gives Golbez the Earth Crystal and Golbez tricks Cecil and doesn’t give Rosa back. Tellah then decides to fight Golbez to avenge Anna and then decides to cast Meteo on Golbez, using the last ounce of his strength. Unfortunately, Tellah dies and failed to get his revenge on Golbez and then Golbez attacks Cecil but he couldn’t finish off for some reason and his control over Kain is broken. Kain apologizes and he then joins up with Cecil and the others and they save Rosa before the blade finishes her off and then after talking with Cecil and the others, Rosa joins up with the others. They then all encounter Valvadis, the next elemental fiend and after defeating her, Rosa casts Exit and they return back to Baron Castle. Cecil finds himself back in his room again and then Kain tells Cecil that there are actually 8 Crystals present in the world, the 4 that Golbez has and the 4 Dark Crystals that are hidden underground. He then explains that when all 8 Crystals gather together, a path to the moon will open up and then Kain gives Cecil the Magma Key needed to use to get underground. Cecil and the others board the Enterprise and they then head to the town of Agart by a large mountain. Cecil and the others enter the town and after dropping the Magma Key in the large well, a hole opens up in the mountain and then Cecil and the others head into the hole. After a battle between the Red Wings and some tanks, the Enterprise then lands underground and then Cecil and the others head inside to a nearby Castle.

After arriving in the Castle, Cecil and the others then talk to King Giott and he tells Cecil that two of the four Dark Crystals are already gone but Giott’s Crystal is still safe for now. King Giott asks Cecil and the others to defend the Castle using Cid’s airship but then Cid tells him that the airship is beat up for the time being so he has to go and repair it. King Giott claims the Crystal is hidden safely behind the throne but then Yang senses something is wrong and they see a bunch of dolls dancing around in the Crystal room and after defeating them, Golbez appears and then explains that with the 8 Crystals, he can open the Tower of Babil which opens up a path to the moon which holds power beyond compression. Golbez then attacks Cecil and the others and later on, Rydia joins Cecil and the others and they manage to defeat Golbez with her help. Rydia then explains to the others that Leviathian took her to the Land of the Summons and they became friends and there, she learned her summoning abilities but lost her white magic power altogether. She also explains that time flows differently there which explains why she looks a little older now and just as Cecil and the others leave, Golbez’s hand reaches out and takes the Crystal and disappears. Giott then explains that Cecil and the others head to the Tower of Babil to get the Crystals back and Cecil and the others agree. Inside the Tower, Cecil and the others find the TowerKey and later on Yang appears to sacrifice himself and then later on, Cecil and the others encounter Golbez and he then destroys the bridge, leading Cecil and the others to almost certain death. Cecil and the others get saved by Cid, flying in the new Enterprise and then the Red Wings chase after the Enterprise. Cid then tells Cecil to take over as he tries to seal the cave with a bomb and he tells the others to head to Baron as he sets himself up the bomb and it seems he has died.

Back in Baron Castle, Cecil and the others find Cid’s two helpers and they attach a hook to the Enterprise which will help Cecil and the others along the way for their journey. Cecil and the others head to Eblan Castle and after exploring for a little bit, they head to Cave Eblan nearby and inside the cave, they encounter Edge, who is the prince of Eblan and from there, they all head to the Tower of Babil. Inside the tower, they encounter Edge’s mother and father, Queen and King Eblan and a battle occurs. After a scene involving Edge and his parents, Rubicant, the final elemental fiend comes in and then Edge and the others eventually defeat him and then Rubicant vanishes. Later on, Eblan troops rush in and they offer to help Cecil and the others but it is not needed and then Cecil explains to Edge about the whole Golbez thing and the Crystals too. Edge and the others steal an airship from the Red Wing fleet, called the “Falcon” and they all head back to see King Giott again. Later on, King Giott gives Cecil a mystical necklace to enter the sealed cave and then Cecil and the others find Cid sleeping inside the castle. They manage to explain their dilemma to Cid, since the sealed cave is over lava and then Cid upgrades the Falcon to their liking and the goes back to sleep again after finishing the upgrades. Cecil and the others then finally head off to the Sealed Cave and after entering it, they eventually manage to find the Dark Crystal and then the walls close in on them and they end up fighting an evil wall.

After defeating it, Cecil and the others reach the entrance of the cave and they hear Golbez’s voice again and he controls Kain once again and then Kain takes the Crystal away from Cecil and into Golbez’s hands. Cecil and the others head back to the Dwarven Castle again and then King Giott tells them about the Lunar Whale Ship, the moon and the old Mysidian Legend. Cid installs a drill on the Falcon so that Cecil and the others can head back to Earth and then Cecil and the others manage to return back to Mysidia. At Mysidia, the Elder tells about the Mysidian Legend and they all pray and summon the Lunar Whale and then Cecil and the others use the Lunar Whale to head to the moon to go after Golbez and Kain. After going through the Lunar Path, Cecil and the others enter the Crystal Palace and they meet a strange old man named FuSoYa, a lunarian and then he tells about the lunarians and explains that Golbez is being controlled by another lunarian named Zemus and that he plans on summoning the Giant of Babil from the Tower of Babil to destroy Earth. FuSoYa also tells Cecil that he is half-lunarian and then they head back to Earth where they find the Giant of Babil trying to destroy Earth.

Cecil finds that most of his friends are helping out to try and take down the Giant like Edward, Yang, Palom and Porom and many more. Cecil and the others hop into Cid’s airship and then they enter the Giant of Babil. Inside the Giant, Cecil and the others encounter the Four Elemental Fiends once again and after defeating them for good, Cecil and the others find Golbez and then FuSoYa casts a spell which removes Zemus’ control over Golbez and it is revealed that Golbez is Cecil’s brother. The Giant them crumbles and then Kain is no longer under control anymore and they all head back to the Lunar Whale. Cecil and the others then head back to the Crystal Palace on the moon to go after Zemus and stop him once and for all. FuSoYa and Golbez go on ahead and then Cecil and the others teleport themselves to the Lunar Subterrane. Eventually, Cecil and the others meet up with Golbez and FuSoYa who have confronted Zemus and they fight him. They both cast Meteo on Zemus and then Zemus is defeated and turns into his true form, called Zeromus. Golbez and FuSoYa go after Zeromus but then Golbez tries to use the Crystal on Zeromus but it doesn’t work in the hands of darkness and then Zeromus defeats Golbez and FuSoYa. Golbez gives the Crystal to Cecil and then back on Earth, all of Cecil’s friends pray and then Cecil and the others gain power from them and they fight Zeromus to determine the fate of the world. Cecil and the others defeat Zeromus and then after a scene, Golbez goes with FuSoYa to know more about his lunarian past and thanks Cecil and then Cecil and the others head back to Earth. Cecil and Rosa then get married and become the new King and Queen of Baron and thus, FFIV ends and the ending is a good one. This concludes the full-story of FFIV, and it’s a solid storyline as well……

Graphics

For it’s time, Final Fantasy IV’s graphics were considered very good for it’s time with excellent detail on the actual backgrounds and the animations were quite fluid for the most part overall. FFIV made significant improvements in terms of graphical capabilities over the previous FF game, FFIII. Using the added power found on the SNES, Square managed to make surprising advancements in terms of spell effects along with many other graphical treats as well. As usual, FFIV goes with the standard “Super-Deformed” style characters found in previous FF games and they are animated better than ever before. The backgrounds are well-detailed although some of them are kind of repetitive but considering that FFIV is the first FF game for the SNES, the backgrounds were equally as impressive. The graphical style is old-school with a medieval setting found in many RPG games and the summon animations are a huge leap over FFIII. From amazing spells such as Meteo to beautifully drawn character sprites and enemies as well as gorgeous backgrounds, FFIV’s graphics are definitely something to marvel about and it is sure to please any old-school RPG fan. But that’s not to say that the graphics are perfect though, FFIV does suffer a bit from slowdown at times, especially during the final boss battle and while some areas of the game are very similar to each other, FFIV’s graphics are still considered very good for the most part. With that set aside, FFIV made large leaps in terms of graphics from FFIII and it made use of the new SNES hardware at the time, a big plus in my opinion. In the FF Chronicles remake of FFIV, Square added in some FMVs although there are very few and the quality is quite poor in my opinion. But still, the graphics in FFIV for the most part are solid and the game runs at nice frame rate. FFIV’s graphics are the best that I’ve seen in any RPG game during it’s time and it’s one of the game’s strongest points.

Gameplay

The gameplay in FFIV is fairly solid although the game is quite challenging due to the fact that you can only carry so many items throughout the game. Unlike newer games, FFIV has a limit of items that you can carry, so you really have to be conservative in this game but that’s a good thing since it makes the game harder. Although the overall gameplay isn’t entirely innovative as characters learn magic as they level up, the gameplay in FFIV is solid and there is nothing you can truly fault about FFIV. However, weapons and armor in FFIV have confusing names and all different types of armor usually have the same name, like a set of some sort which is pretty interesting in my opinion. Other than that, FFIV doesn’t really offer anything special from other FF games; it’s the usual RPG drill, level up, gain experience points and so on. The game is challenging though, which is a good thing but there are a lot of enemy encounters in the game. Nothing to fault about that though, but it does get tedious after awhile but otherwise, the gameplay in FFIV is solid and it doesn’t confuse anyone, which is good but however, it doesn’t offer anything different from past FF games. The gameplay is solid overall but not phenomenal or anything though but it’s still good in my humble opinion and many RPG gamers would probably agree with me on this one.

Storyline

The storyline in FFIV is quite interesting and it’s more complex that any other FF game before it. There are a solid amount of twists and turns throughout the storyline in FFIV although the game is quite short compared to FFVII or FFIX. Still, the game is nevertheless challenging and the storyline is quite intriguing to many RPG fanatics alike. As usual, Crystals are present in FFIV, just like in previous FF games and every character has their own class, each with unique set abilities. For example, Rosa is a White Mage and can only use White Magic and Rydia is a summoner, who can summon monsters like Bahamut, Ifrit and so on. While this isn’t varied, it was still considered good for it’s time and the overall pace of the storyline is good, with no actual storyline slowdown or stuff like that as the storyline is fluid with plenty of twists and turns throughout the course of the game. There are many twists throughout FFIV and the ending is also not bad as well and there really isn’t much that ruins the storyline overall so that’s a good thing. The storyline is short, not too complex, yet not too simple which is good and has the perfect balance of drama, plot twists and suspense to keep gamers interested during the course of the game. While some events can be cheesy, FFIV’s storyline is still great and it’s quite well-written for the most part overall……

Sound

The music in FFIV is very good with plenty of nice classical tracks present throughout the game. While some tracks may be repetitive, but they are pure genius on the part of Nobuo Uematsu and FFIV features some of Nobuo Uematsu’s best work. Most of the classical FF themes are present like the standard victory fanfare found in every FF game and the usual “Crystal” theme is back once again, sounding better than ever. Most of the tracks in FFIV fit the mood of the game very well in my opinon although the tracks sometimes lack in terms of variety but nevertheless, they are still a real treat to listen to. The sound effects may not be the best as they sound out of date in terms of today’s standards but the sword slashes are excellent sounding and the boss theme is pretty good in my opinion. Most characters don’t have their own theme song unlike other FF games but overall I enjoyed the game’s tracks very much although some tracks seem just a tad cheesy in my opinion. Aside for the cheese factor, FFIV has some classical sounding tracks and its old-school FF at their very best. Sound is another strong point in FFIV, as if good graphics aren’t enough although some battle effects sound a little weird but considering that FFIV is the first FF game on the SNES, I’d say that Square did a very good job on the music in FFIV.

Fun Factor

FFIV is actually quite an interesting and fun game, even though it’s an old RPG game. Anyways, there are a good amount of sidequests throughout the course of FFIV and there are quite a few considering that FFIV is an old FF game. FFIV’s sidequests aren’t entirely fun and exciting to everyone although I must say that they are challenging, nevertheless. The storyline is interesting but there isn’t that much to do besides that but still, FFIV does have a few extras that might be worth checking out like getting every character’s final weapons and getting some secret summons and so on……. The sidequests are an integral part to your success in FFIV as the secret summons are pretty essential to your success throughout the game and they are truly helpful. The storyline itself is interesting and it will make gamers interested for at least a couple of times through. Although after beating the game several times, gamers will probably want something else to do but unfortunately, there isn’t anything else much to do after you’ve beaten the game several times. The fun factor for this game is pretty good but it’s not excellent or anything though. Still FFIV is a fun game, regardless……….

Overall

For the most part FFIV doesn’t have too many faults which directly affect the game, most of them are minor and they don’t really hurt the game in any real way. While FFIV’s gameplay isn’t innovative or anything like that, it’s simple and efficient for the most part although sometimes it lacks variety but it’s still good nevertheless. The item organization isn’t all that great in FFIV although it makes the game harder and more challenging overall. The graphics were pretty good for it’s time and the backgrounds were colourful and the character animations had some good detail in them as well. The spell effects are actually flashy but they get the job done, regardless and the music in FFIV is classical FF fare, with excellent music and it fits the emotion and mood very well with the exception of a few cheesy scenes and tracks. The character development is solid and while only a few characters have strong roles in the game, considering that FFIV is an old game, the character development is solid although not excellent or anything. The storyline in FF4 is interesting, not too complex but yet not too simple so that’s good and there are enough storyline twists to keep gamers interested for quite some time. Plus, there are several sidequests to keep people busy for quite some time and some of them are pretty challenging although it’s nothing too special though. Overall, FFIV is an excellent old-school FF and it’s a deep and compelling RPG game with plenty of twists and turns in the story to make gamers interested for some time. In my opinion, with excellent musical tracks and good graphics along with an interesting storyline, FF4 is old school Final Fantasy at it’s best and it’s one of the best RPG games on the SNES.

Ratings (Compare w/ other games)

GRAPHICS: 8/10 8 The graphics in FF4 are considered very good for it’s time and while the spell effects aren’t entirely flashy, they certainly get the job done and the character animations are quite fluid for the most part. The summon animations are a big leap over FFIII and while the game slows down at some points, the graphics in FF4 are very good.
GAMEPLAY: 14/20 7 Nothing really new or innovative here but still, the gameplay in FF4 is still solid and while the item organization is poor, it makes the game harder and more challenging overall. Characters once again have classes and each character has their own unique abilities and attributes but the variety in party management isn’t really present in this game although it’s not necessary a bad thing or anything. The gameplay in FF4 is solid, while not great or innovative, it works out just fine.
STORYLINE: 17/20 8.5 The storyline in FFIV is quite interesting and it’s more complex that any other FF game before it. There are a solid amount of twists and turns throughout the storyline in FFIV although the game is quite short compared to FFVII or FFIX. The storyline in FFIV is deep and compelling like no RPG before it and it’s one of the best storylines ever found in any old-school FF game to date.
SOUND: 9/10 9 The music in FF4 is classic FF fare with many memorable tracks and the music seems to fit in the game’s mood pretty well for the most part. Most of the tracks in FF4 aren’t exactly varied but nevertheless, they are excellent sounding and are some of Nobuo Uematsu’s best work throughout the FF series. The standard Crystal theme is also back in this game, sounding better than ever and the music in FF4 is sheer old-school FF greatness that’s tough to top.
FUN FACTOR: 7.5/10 7.5 FFIV is actually quite an interesting and fun game, even though it’s an old RPG game. Anyways, there are a good amount of sidequests throughout the course of FFIV and there are quite a few considering that FFIV is an old FF game. FFIV’s sidequests aren’t entirely fun and exciting to everyone although I must say that they are challenging, nevertheless. Still, the storyline has enough twists and turns and suspense to keep gamers busy for at least a little while though……

OVERALL: 55.5/70 7.9 Final Fantasy IV is an amazing old-school RPG game that’s worth checking out and the graphics and sound are excellent and they hold it’s own even in today’s standards at times. The character animations are good and they are a big improvement over the NES FF games and the music is as good as it gets in any old-school FF game. The gameplay is solid but not complex or innovative but while it’s not entirely excellent, the storyline in FFIV has enough emotional events and exciting parts to keep gamers busy and into the game, which is a big plus in my opinion. Overall, FFIV is one of the best old-school FF games of all time and it truly defines the real meaning of “Fantasy”. Good game overall…….
