Introduction

Before Final Fantasy VII was released around the world in 1997, the RPG game genre never really hit it big in North America. Sure, there were a few good RPG games with their own dedicated followings like Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger but those games only appealed to the hardcore RPG gaming crowd. But the fact was that RPG games were not popular in North America unlike in Japan where RPG games have always been popular. Both the Square's Final Fantasy series and Enix's Dragon Quest series dominated RPG sales charts across Japan and emerged as the two most dominant RPG franchises in Japan.

For some reason, most North American gamers just never really gave RPG games a chance, in fact, only a handful of gamers actually tried RPGs before the release of FFVII. During this time period, the state of the RPG game market in North America reached it's "dark age" and many companies were very hesitant to even think of releasing RPG games to the North American gaming market. But all that changed with the anticipated release of Final Fantasy VII in North America in 1997. Final Fantasy VII changed the way people viewed and perceived RPG games and it proved to be quite a success. FFVII broke down many barriers that hindered the success of previous RPG games and it even managed to break new ground and revolutionize the gaming world.

Final Fantasy VII was the most expensive game ever made during it's time with total costs of making the game well over 1 million. With some outstanding quality FMVs, memorable characters and a very well-written storyline, Final Fantasy VII was a great RPG game in it's own right and it even managed to appeal to the casual gamer as well as the RPG game fanatics. With lot's of excellent-quality FMVs and a whole load of fun mini-games and other extras, Final Fantasy VII was a mass hit across the world and marked the true beginning of success of RPGs in North America.

Disc 1

You take on the role of Cloud Strife, an ex-member of SOLDIER who is a mercenary for hire who at the beginning of the game, helps out a rebel faction out on an assault on Mako Reactor Number 7. The rebel faction is known as AVALANCHE a group who wants to stop a greedy corporation from ruining the lives of many people in the city of Midgar, where the game first takes place in. Soon, it is revealed that the name of the corporation is called Shinra, Inc. which is an electric power company in the city of Midgar, a very big corporation in fact.

After the successful assault on Mako Reactor 7, Cloud and the AVALANCHE end up in the city of Midgar and Cloud meets a girl selling flowers in the streets of the city, you'll find out her name later though. Cloud then later on finds himself surrounded by a group of Shinra guards and after several encounters with them, Cloud jumps onto a passing train and meets up with AVALANCHE again. On the train, Jessie, a member of AVALANCHE shows Cloud a map indicator of the location of Reactor 7 in which they previously destroyed. After talking a little bit with Barret on the train, Cloud then heads to the AVALANCHE base with the other group members. Inside the base, Cloud meets up with Tifa Lockheart, also member of AVALANCHE and Cloud's childhood friend back in Nibelheim, which is another town in the game. Cloud also meets up with Marlene, who is supposedly Barret's daughter and Barret then reveals the hidden base after Cloud tries leaving the AVALANCHE headquarters. Soon there is a scene involving Tifa and Cloud in which you will learn a little bit more about their past times in Nibelheim. After meeting with Barret again, he then pays Cloud 1500 Gil for helping out on the assault on Mako Reactor 7.

Cloud then heads back to the train to meet up with AVALANCHE as they prepare for their next mission in which they plan on destroying another Mako Reactor, this time it's Reactor 5. After boarding the train, the security alarm has been set off and Cloud, Tifa and the rest of AVALANCHE hop from one train car to another to avoid the ID check. Cloud, Barret and Tifa then hop off the train and they travel through an underground railroad passageway to reach Reactor 5. They climb down a hatch near the green barrier at the end of the passageway and then they enter Reactor 5 through a series of ladders and tunnels. While Reactor 5 is very similar to Reactor 7, they are not completely the same but they sure do look familiar, anyways, after Cloud tinkers with the switch, he then goes to an elevator which takes himself, Tifa and Barret to a new floor in the Reactor. After they hit the panels at the same time, they are eventually stopped by a group of Shinra guards and Cloud, Tifa and Barret meet President Shinra for the first time. After that, President Shinra then escapes in the helicopter and sends out a large machine to deal with Cloud and the others. After Cloud and the others destroy the machine, the explosion makes Cloud fall of the Reactor and he eventually finds himself in a Church.

Cloud then realizes where he is and he finds that girl who sold him flowers back in Midgar. Cloud finds out that her name is Aeris and then Reno, a member of the Turks, an elite force in Shinra, sends some guards to capture Aeris. Cloud then saves Aeris and then they both escape the Church from the hands of Reno and the Shinra guards. Cloud then visits Aeris' mother, Elmyra at her house and you find out about Aeris' past. Cloud then spends the night at Aeris's house and when Cloud wakes up the next day, he sneaks out of the house but Aeris then joins up with Cloud again. Cloud and Aeris eventually reach the Wall Market, a village in Midgar and Cloud finds out that Tifa is kept in a large building but he later finds out that he needs to dress up as a girl to get inside the building. After finding a dress and other things to dress up like a girl, Cloud and Aeris then enter the building which is known as Don Corneo's Mansion. Later on, Cloud reveals his true self and then he deals with Corneo's guards and gets rid of them. He meets up with Aeris and then they find Tifa in Don Corneo's room and they confront him. Don Corneo manages to use a trapdoor that leads Cloud, Aeris and Tifa to a sewer before they can leak out any information about Shinra from him.

Eventually, they escape from the sewers and they pass through the Train Graveyard before reaching the AVALANCHE base where they find Barret in the midst of a skirmish with the Shinra. Cloud and Tifa join up with Barret and they eventually reach the top of a tower where they find Reno and the Turks. Cloud, Tifa and Barret then engage in a battle with Reno but Reno escapes shortly afterwards. Cloud finds out that Shinra has captured Aeris and they take her and Marlene away in a helicopter. Cloud then finds a way to enter the Shinra Headquarters building from the Wall Market nearby as Tifa and Barret follows him to save Aeris and Marlene from the Shinra. After going up some 60 odd floors, Cloud and friends reached the main floor of the Shinra Building where the premises are heavily guarded by several Shinra guards. Cloud and the others eventually find a way to sneak past the guards and after that, Cloud and friends slowly made their way up the building by finding some keycards to enter the doors. Cloud and the others finally reached a lab room where they find Aeris held captive and they are introduced to Hojo for the first time. It is revealed that Hojo is a Shinra scientist and the main reason that Shinra is after Aeris is because they believe Aeris is the last surviving Ancient in the world. Ancients are a race of people who are believed to have special powers, they can see the future and so on. Hojo believes that if Shinra has control over Aeris, they would have access to some unimaginable power that could help them in the long run. Cloud and friends also manage to cross paths with a beast in which Hojo is also doing research on as well. The beast then attacks Hojo and Cloud and friends try to escape the building but to no avail. Later on, it is revealed that the beast's name is Red XIII and he tries to escape the building as well but Cloud, Aeris, Tifa, Barret and Red XIII manage to find themselves surrounded by Shinra guards and Cloud and friends see President Shinra again. They try to negotiate a way to improve the lives of the people of Midgar but the President sends some Shinra guards to arrest them and put them in a jail inside the Shinra Building. The very next day, Cloud finds out that his cell door is unlocked and he sees some Shinra guards nearby lying down and he finds out that they are all dead. Cloud quickly wakes up the others and they agree to split up to check out what happened. Cloud goes on up first and the others are to meet Cloud up on the top floor. The others eventually meet up with Cloud on the top floor of the building and they find out that President Shinra is dead. Cloud believes that a man named Sephiroth could have killed of the President but never truly reveals who Sephiroth is at this point of the game. Cloud and the others see a helicopter land outside of the building and they find out that the President has a son named Rufus. Cloud fights Rufus but Rufus escapes in the helicopter after the fight and Cloud then meets up with the others again. They then escape from the building and they escape from the Shinra using a stolen motorcyle and truck from the headquarters. They make it back to Midgar and from there, Red XIII suggests they should travel to a town named Kalm to discuss about what the others plan to do about Shinra and Sephiroth. After reaching Kalm, Cloud begins to tell the story about his past and about Sephiroth.............

Cloud's Past: The story begins 5 years ago, back when a man named Sephiroth was part of SOLDIER and Cloud was in SOLDIER as well. Sephiroth was Cloud's idol back then and he was one of the best members of SOLDIER, maybe even the best out of all of them. One day, Sephiroth and Cloud were on a mission to check out the Mako Reactor on Mt. Nibel which was near Nibelheim, Cloud's hometown. After taking a day's rest in Nibelheim, Cloud and Sephiroth met up with Tifa, who was supposed to be their guide for the day on the way to Mt. Nibel. They first take a picture for a Sephiroth fan before heading off for Mt. Nibel. After reaching the Mt. Nibel reactor, Sephiroth makes a shocking discovery: He finds out that a monster named Jenova is frozen inside one of the chambers in the reactor. Strangely enough, Sephiroth tells Cloud that Jenova was the name of his mother and that she died after giving birth to Sephiroth. After that, Sephiroth goes ballistic and begins to feel that he is a freak of nature, that he's not human after all. Shortly after this incident, Cloud finds Sephiroth again this time in a library in the Nibelheim Mansion and Sephiroth continues to research about Jenova and then he feels that Cloud, who has a lot of Mako energy in him for some reason, is opposing him and Sephiroth believes that Cloud isn't worthy of living on this planet. Then, Sephiroth goes back to the Mt. Nibel reactor and Cloud follows him behind without him knowing and Cloud wants to know what is Sephiroth doing. Sephiroth then restores Jenova and he begins to feel that his destiny is to rule the planet along with his rightful mother, Jenova. He begins to feel that he is special, that no one else on the planet other than Jenova is worthy of living and that his destiny is to destroy those who oppose him. After that, Sephiroth burned the town of Nibelheim and he was never seen again.
Cloud tells the others that Sephiroth is evil and that he intends to rule the planet along with his mother, Jenova. Cloud tells the others that they should find Sephiroth and put a stop to his evil plans. They then leave Kalm and head to the town of Junon, where Rufus will be announced as the next Shinra President. Along the way, they manage to cross a swamp, avoiding the deadly Midgar Zolom and they find Sephiroth's giant sword stabbed right through the Midgar Zolom after crossing the swamp.

Moving on, they encounter Elena, Reno and Rude of the Turks and they find out that Shinra is also after Sephiroth as well. Since Shinra is also after Sephiroth, it makes things more complicated for Cloud and the others as they have to deal with both Sephiroth and Shinra. After reaching the town of Junon, they find a girl named Priscilla and Cloud ends up giving CPR to save her life. After that, Priscilla helps out Cloud and the others by calling a dolphin to give Cloud a lift to reach a platform that eventually leads to Junon Airport, where Rufus and the rest of Shinra are located. Cloud finds a Shinra uniform in a locker and a Shinra officer finds Cloud and tells him to follow another group of Shinra soldiers to practice their marching routine for Rufus. After practicing it, Cloud then marches through the parade like any other Shinra soldier, without anyone noticing who he really is. Cloud and several other Shinra soldiers do their marching routine in front of General Heideggar and Rufus, the new Shinra President. After that, Rufus and Heideggar board a ship to reach Costa de Sol, a resort town on another continent as they try to pursue Sephiroth. Cloud meets up with the others on board the Shinra cargo ship and the others are dressed in Shinra uniforms so that no one catches them.
Later along the way, an alarm sounds and Cloud and the others find some Shinra guards lying dead again. Cloud manages to find Sephiroth but he sends out one of Jenova's many forms to fight Cloud and the others before flying away. They manage to beat Jenova and things continue on as normal for the rest of the trip. After the long journey, Rufus and Heideggar get off the cargo ship and they hitch a ride on Rufus' helicopter. Cloud and the others spend a little bit of time to relax and enjoy the resort of Costa de Sol before heading off to find Sephiroth again. Cloud and the others then travel to North Corel which is Barret's hometown which was badly destroyed by the hands of Shinra some time ago. Cloud and the others learn more about Barret's past and they learn about his friend Dyne who lost an arm by the hands of Shinra.

Cloud and the others then take a lift from Ropeway Station to reach Gold Saucer, a huge amusement park near North Corel. Cloud finds Cait Sith, a stuffed toy mog that is real with a cat on top of it and he joins your cause since he wants to see if his fortune-telling prophecies will actually come true. After exploring through Gold Saucer, Cloud and the others find a whole bunch of dead bodies in the Battle Square which can only be done by a man with a gun for an arm. Could Barret be the one possibly behind this devastating massacre? Dio, the owner of Gold Saucer blames Cloud and the others for the carnage and he sends several robots to throw them into Corel Prison, which is located at the base of Gold Saucer. Cloud finds a building and he meets up with Barret and the others find him there as well. After Barret explains more of his past to Cloud and the others, and shortly afterwards, Cloud and the others run into Dyne, who is Barret's friend from the past. It is revealed that Marlene is actually Dyne's daughter and Dyne tells Barret that they must fight. Barret is forced to fight Dyne and after the battle, Dyne tells Barret to protect Marlene and then Dyne dies in front of Barret.
Cloud and the others then head back to the trailer where Mr. Coates, head of Corel Prison, invites Cloud to be a Chocobo Racer. Cloud finds out that he has to win the Chocobo race to be freed from Corel Prison and with the help of Ester, a Chocobo Racing expert, he wins the Chocobo Race which enables freedom from Corel Prison for Cloud and the others. Cloud also gets a buggy for winning the race, a vehicle which enables Cloud and the others to travel across shallow waters on the World Map. Using the buggy, Cloud then crosses a river south of Gold Saucer and ends up in the town of Gongaga and it is revealed that Tifa once knew a guy named Zack but she is very hesitant to tell anyone about him. Cloud and the others cross paths with Reno and the Turks and Cloud fights with Reno and Rude. After the battle, Cloud heads northeast and finds the remains of a scrapped reactor which is the old Gongaga Reactor. Cloud hides behind a piece of scrapped metal after Tseng, leader of the Turks and Scarlet, also of Shinra show up and they talk about "Huge Materia". Cloud and the others head to Cosmo Canyon, which is Red XIII's hometown and along the way, the buggy get's shortened out and Cloud has to get it repaired with the help of the people of Cosmo Canyon.
It is revealed that Red XIII's real name is Nanaki and Cloud and the others spend some time exploring the village. The local people of Cosmo Canyon call Red XIII by the name of Nanaki, by the way. Eventually, Cloud meets up with Red XIII and his grandfather, Bugenhagen who seems to know a whole lot about the planet itself and has an observatory as well. Bugenhagen then follows Cloud and the others as they head to The Cave of the Gi, a sacred cavern underground in Cosmo Canyon as Bugenhagen wants to show Red XIII something. After reaching the end of the cave, Red XIII talks a little bit about his father, Seto and claimed he was a coward. But Bugenhagen convinces Red XIII that he was a hero and sacrificed himself to save the people of Cosmo Canyon during a great war and shows him a statue of Seto as well. They leave the cave and return back to Cosmo Canyon and Red XIII rejoins Cloud and the others as Bugenhagen tells Cloud to bring Red XIII along for the journey to learn more about himself and his abilities. Cloud and the others then decide to head to Nibelheim, the town where Sephiroth had burned down several years ago.

After reaching the town of Nibelheim, Cloud and the others hear something about a reunion and that it involves Sephiroth somehow and they track Sephiroth down to the Shinra Mansion. Cloud and the others meet up with Sephiroth inside the Mansion and Sephiroth explains to Cloud about the reunion in which Jenova will take part in as well. Sephiroth tells Cloud that he plans on passing by Mt. Nibel and that he can follow him if he wants and Sephiroth then flies away again.

Meeting the Vampire (Sidequest): Inside the Shinra Mansion in Nibelheim, there is a piece of paper written by a Shinra employee near the entrance. The paper describes that inside the mansion there is a secret and that you have to solve the puzzle to unlock the safe located in the mansion. Here are the locations on where to find the safe numbers:

- Search the other side of the broken piano in the west wing of the building
- Check out the hallway in the east wing, just north from the bedroom
- Carefully read the piece of paper and set the cursor on the blank space at the bottom
- Open the treasure chest in the greenhouse area of the mansion, then check it out again

The code for the safe in the mansion is: Turn right to 36, left to 10, right to 59 and finally, right to 97. After successfully opening the safe, you will have to fight a boss. When you defeat the boss, you obtain the Odin Materia as well as a key, which is needed to open another room in the basement of the mansion. Go downstairs to the basement and open a door in the dark area of the basement, near the library where you meet Sephiroth. Once you're inside the room, you'll find Vincent sleeping in the center coffin and you'll describe about your quest to him. He'll go back to sleep in his coffin and after you talk to him again, you get to name him and after leaving the room, he'll join your party. Vincent is one of two secret characters in the game and he's really an ex-member of the Turks and he's quite useful to have in your party throughout most of the game since his weapons are long-range.

After passing through Mt. Nibel, Cloud and the others arrive at Rocket Town and they eventually meet up with Cid Highwind and he describes about his past and that he just missed flying into space, which is his lifelong dream since he had to cancel the mission to save the life of Shera. Rufus and the Shinra arrive after Cloud and the others leave Cid's house and Shera then spots Palmer, who is the head of Shinra's space department and Cloud and the others confront him in the backyard of Cid's house. Before the battle takes place, it is revealed that Rufus plans on using Cid's plane to help the Shinra go after Sephiroth. After defeating Palmer, Cloud and the others escape using Cid's Tiny Bronco and Cid hops on the plane as well. The Tiny Bronco then crashes and washes up near shore and they manage to find a house on the shore and a blacksmith inside the house tells Cloud about what the keystone does and he also tells him that Dio, owner of Gold Saucer has possession of the keystone.

Yuffie is a traitor? (Stolen Materia Sidquest): When the Tiny Bronco first crashes on the World Map, head to the western most island on the map. Head through the mountain pass and go into the town of Wutai, which is located on the island somewhere. When you enter the town, you probably noticed that your materia is missing right? You then find out that Yuffie took all of your materia and that you will have to get it back from her. When you see Yuffie running by you, follow her and you will have to explore the town to catch her as well. If you end up picking up materia in the town, Yuffie will just run by and take it, pretty greedy eh? Eventually, when you do catch her, Yuffie will tell you everything and the reasons why she took your materia and she will tell you to pull on the switch to the left to get all your materia back. After pulling the switch, you find yourself trapped in a cage, Yuffie tricked you again! After leaving her house, head to the northwest corner of Wutai and you will find a temple located there. Ring the gong and you will find a secret passage which leads to Don Corneo, remember him? You find out that Corneo is keeping both Yuffie and Elena and he runs away with them. After some battles, head to the Da Chao mountains near the town and with the help of Reno and Rude, who are mainly helping you to save Elena you end up finding Corneo again. He summons a monster after you and after defeating it, Corneo then falls down and you rescue both Yuffie and Elena. Shortly afterwards, Yuffie finally gives back all your materia and then you can head back to the plane again. I wonder what you guys will think of Yuffie after this ordeal?

After reaching Gold Saucer, find Dio at the Battle Square and head to his showroom. Cloud finds the keystone in the center room on the pillar and when Cloud tries to take it, Dio enters the room and tells Cloud and the others that they can borrow it if you agree to fight in the Battle Arena. They agree and after fighting in the arena, Cloud gets the keystone and they try to leave Gold Saucer but it appears that the transportation system has been temporarily knocked out of service. Cloud and the others have to spend the night at the Ghost Hotel for the time being and later on that night, Aeris asks Cloud on a date. Cloud finds out that Sephiroth is after the Black Materia and Black Materia is extremely deadly if it's in the wrong hands.

During the date with Aeris, Cloud enters the Gold Saucer theatre and it is announced that both he and Aeris are the 100th couple to enter and they have been selected to perform in the next play. Later on, Cloud and Aeris ride the Gondola together and they are treated to several spectacular views of Gold Saucer. After the date is over, Cloud and Aeris follow Cait Sith and they see that he has stolen the keystone. After following him, Cloud and Aeris finds out that Cait Sith is really a Shinra spy and Cloud is forced to let Cait Sith continue to join their cause.

Cloud and Aeris then head back to the lobby, where the others agree to head to the Temple of the Ancients to get the Black Materia before Sephiroth does. They use the Tiny Bronco to reach the temple and after reaching the ruins of the temple, they enter the site of the ruins. One member of the Turks gives you the keystone inside the ruins and tells you to get rid of Sephiroth. After placing the keystone and going through the ruins, Cloud and the others then see Sephiroth in the Temple and they see him kill of Tseng, leader of the Turks and Sephiroth then disappears again. After going through several pathways, Cloud and the others then find the key to the gate of the Temple and later on they confront Sephiroth again. Sephiroth then talks about some sort of energy within the temple and he disappears and he appears to make Cloud suffer from another mental breakdown again.
It is revealed that Sephiroth plans on casting the spell Meteor and that he plans to destroy the earth with Meteor. After defeating a boss, there is a short sequence with the Black Materia and Cait Sith and Cloud and the others end up facing another boss battle. After the boss is defeated, Cait Sith takes the Black Materia and the entire temple gets destroyed. Cloud and Aeris then goes into the foundation of the temple and they try to retrieve the Black Materia but Sephiroth appears again and forces Cloud to give it to him. After Cloud gives the Black Materia to Sephiroth, he then attacks Aeris, by the way, Cloud is being controlled by Sephiroth again. Cait Sith 2 will show up since the original body was destroyed in the temple explosion and the other party members prevent Cloud from killing Aeris.

After a short dream sequence, Cloud wakes up to find Tifa and Barret in an inn at Gongaga Town and then they head to the Tiny Bronco. Aeris has left your party and it is told that she has went on ahead to go after Sephiroth by herself. Cloud and the others head to Bone Village where they hire a team of diggers to help find the fabled Lunar Harp, since that is the only way to calm the sleeping forest nearby. After passing through the sleeping forest, Cloud and the others then pass through several pathways until they eventually reach the Forgotten City, which is one deserted place! After exploring the area a little bit, Cloud and the others decide to take a rest and during the middle of the night, they return back to the same crossroads as before and they find out a new pathway of spiraled staircases has been revealed which weren't there before. Cloud and the others find themselves in a new city and after crossing several stone pillars, they find Aeris again. Cloud gets close to Aeris and he tries to strike Aeris with his sword again, under the control of Sephiroth but he stops with the help from his friends and then Sephiroth drops down from out of nowhere and stabs Aeris with his giant sword. After Aeris dies, Sephiroth then sends another form of Jenova to attack Cloud and the others. After defeating Jenova, Cloud and the others gather and are saddened by the death of Aeris and Cloud then drops Aeris in a holy pool of water in the Forgotten City, a symbolic end for Aeris which concludes disc 1.

Pretty emotional ending there right? Anyways, that ends off disc 1, which is pretty long and very well-written in my opinion. I'm sure Aeris' death was emotional to all of you RPG gamers out there, I know it was to me...... (End of DISC 1)

Disc 2

Cloud and the others regroup and then they chase after Sephiroth past a series of caves until they reach a snowy town called Glacier Lounge near the top of a mountain. Cloud explores the town for a little bit and then he finds a map in one of the cabins and he decides to head down the big hill at the end of the town. Cloud then gets stopped by the Shinra and Elena then tries to punch Cloud after a short confrontation and he will either get hit by the punch or he will dodge the punch depending on what you do just before the attack hits you. After this sequence, the town is now under control by several Shinra guards and after Cloud finds a snowboard in the town, he then heads to the hill and then after reaching the base of the hill, Cloud and the others are faced with the task of finding their way up to the summit. Eventually, Cloud and the others pass out and later on, Cloud and the others find themselves inside a cozy and warm cabin. After talking to the old man in the cabin, Cloud and the others then learn how to warm themselves up while climbing up the cliffs and then they head on up to the Gaea Cliffs nearby. After passing through the cliffs and reaching the top of the mountain, Cloud and the others then follows the path to a crater and they run into Sephiroth.

Sephiroth then sends out another form of Jenova after Cloud and the others and after defeating Jenova again, Cloud then gives the Black Materia to Red XIII since Cloud might have a mental breakdown at any moment and Cloud also trusts Red XIII as well. Then a series of long scenes occurs and eventually, Sephiroth manages to trick Cloud and the others and forces Cloud to give him the Black Materia again. After that, the guardians of the planet are released from the crater which are called Weapons and there are four Weapons in all: Diamond Weapon, Ultimate Weapon, Ruby Weapon and the Emerald Weapon. Sephiroth then casts a barrier around the crater and summons Meteor, the ultimate destructive magic, to destroy the planet.

A scene follows shortly in which Tifa wakes up a week later and finds herself locked up in a cell along with Barret. They are about to be executed on national television by the Shinra and then a Shinra guard then leads Tifa to her execution chamber and the guard then straps Tifa into the gas chamber chair. Just when the Shinra soldiers were about to turn on the switch for the gas chamber, the Shinra soldiers get distracted by the Diamond Weapon and they begin to fire at the Weapon. During the distraction, Cait Sith then reveals himself and frees Barret and then they end up trying to open the door to the gas chamber but it wouldn't budge. Barret then tries to find the control room to shut off the gas chamber but then Scarlet locks the room up. Cait Sith then tells Barret to head to the airport and Barret doesn't want to leave Tifa but realizes he has no choice. Tifa finds a dropped key near her and she uses it to free herself from the gas chamber chair and then she hits the left switch to shut off the gas chamber. Then, a scene occurs in which the Shinra soldiers try to stop the Diamond Weapon with all they've got but to no avail. The Diamond Weapon then fires a beam which blows a hole through the gas chamber. The Shinra respond by firing the giant Junon cannon which sends the Diamond Weapon back into the water again. Tifa then climbs out of the gas chamber using the hole and after running down the cannon, she is confronted by Scarlet. After a fun slap battle with Scarlet, Tifa then reaches the end of the cannon and hops onto the new airship that Cid found, the Highwind. Now the rest of the party agree that they now have to find out where Cloud went to and on board the Highwind, Red XIII mentions something about an island down south where Cloud might possibly be in the hands of a doctor. They then head off to Mideel, the southern island where Cloud is and they enter the town. Inside the town, Tifa overhears about two people talking about a spikey-haired guy that washed up on shore and then Tifa then decides to stay with Cloud inside the Mideel hospital. It appears that Cloud has been flooded with Mako poisoning and then Cait Sith then informs the rest of the party that Shinra's next stop is North Corel and that they plan on finding some Huge Materia there in the North Corel Reactor.

On board the Highwind, the rest of the party then decide on who's going to be the new leader now that Cloud is under the care of the Mideel doctor for the time being. They eventually chose Cid to be their new leader and then they decide to head back to North Corel. After arriving in North Corel, Cid and the others then head off to the North Corel Reactor by going through the entrance past the long bridge. When they reach the Reactor, Cid and the others then hop on aboard a train in hopes of catching the Shinra and retrieving the Huge Materia. After they reach the front of the train, Cid then uses the levers to catch up to the Shinra train which was in front of them before and Cid and the others then battle their way up to the front of the Shinra train. Cid then plays around with the controls in hopes of stopping the Shinra train before it crashes into the village of North Corel. After making a complete stop, Cid and the others manage to obtain the Huge Materia and then they head back to the Highwind again. Cid and the others then agree on getting the rest of the Huge Materia from the Shinra and they then decide to head to Fort Condor to continue their Huge Materia quest.
After arriving in Fort Condor, Cid and the others agree to help out the people of Fort Condor in defending the fort and stopping the Shinra. Soon it is revealed that Shinra is after a powerful materia orb just below the area where the golden condor sits within the top of the fort. The people of the fort then explain to Cid, what are they supposed to do to defend the fort from the Shinra. After successfully defending the fort, Cid and the others find out that a condor egg has hatched and from there, they find the Phoenix Materia and then a man at the fort then gives Cid and the others another piece of the Huge Materia. After receiving the piece of the Huge Materia, Cid and the others then return back to the Highwind where they decide to check up on how Cloud and Tifa are doing in the town of Mideel. Once reaching Mideel, Cid and the others head to the hospital and after talking to Tifa, they find out that Cloud is still not well and then a big explosion rocks the town. Cid and the others decide to check out what happened and Tifa and Cloud manage to escape from the hospital before it collapses on them. Cid and the others find out that a Weapon is flying around the town and they decide to fight the Weapon. After defeating the Weapon, a FMV sequence then follows involving the Weapon and it then escapes from the town.

Upon falling into the Lifestream, Tifa finds out more about Cloud's past and about his struggles as well. She then talks to each image of Cloud, each one represents one part of Cloud's fragmented memories which are all out of order. Tifa finds out that Cloud never came to Nibelheim with Sephiroth as the "1st class member of SOLDIER" that he said he was and that instead, Tifa waited for Cloud's arrival but Cloud never showed up. Later on, Tifa finds out that Cloud's childhood was troubled and that he never really made any friends during that time period, unlike Tifa who had many friends and Cloud had trouble fitting in with the crowd. Cloud was ashamed for never being able to make it in SOLDIER and Cloud was afraid to reveal himself to Tifa. Eventually, Tifa helps Cloud remember some of his past memories and Tifa then finds out that Cloud did actually show up with Sephiroth in Nibelheim but rather, under the uniform of a Shinra soldier. It is revealed that he did come to help Tifa when she was in danger after Sephiroth uses his sword to knock Tifa down the stairs of the Nibelheim reactor. Finally understanding himself, Cloud returns back to his former self again and he and Tifa then return back to the Highwind to meet up with the others. Cloud then becomes leader again and then Cloud and the others then agree to head to Junon, to find the next piece of the Huge Materia inside the Underwater Junon Reactor.

Upon their arrival in Junon, Cloud and the others head to the elevator to reach the Shinra airport and after passing by a Shinra army group, Cloud and the others then follow them to find the secret location of the Underwater Reactor. After fighting their way through the Shinra guards, Cloud and the others find out that the Huge Materia is being loaded into a Shinra submarine and eventually, they run into Reno again. Reno sends a multi-armed robot after Cloud and the others and after defeating the robot, Cloud and the others then manage to board another submarine in hopes of trying to sink the Shinra submarine to get the Huge Materia. After sinking the red Shinra submarine, search the depths of the ocean and then after finding the sunken submarine Cloud and the others then get the next piece of the Huge Materia and they learn that the Shinra have obtained the 4th and last piece of the Huge Materia and they have taken it to Rocket Town. Cloud and the others then agree to head to Rocket Town in hopes of getting the last piece of the Huge Materia.

After arriving in Rocket Town, Cloud and the others then head to the Rocket and they end up battling Reno and Rude and the Shinra guards as well. After reaching the main control room of the rocket, Cloud and the others learn that Shinra is planning to use the Huge Materia incased in the rocket to try and stop meteor from destroying the planet. Shortly afterwards, Cid finally gets to live his lifelong dream by traveling to space in the rocket and Cloud and the others then see that the rocket is in direct collision course with meteor. To obtain Huge Materia #4, Cloud needs to enter a passcode to break the lock before getting the materia. There is a time limit to enter the code, it doesn't matter if Cloud enters the code correctly or not but anyways, here's the correct code to obtain Huge Materia #4:

The Huge Materia #4 Code is: Circle, Square, X, X

After boarding the Highwind again, Red XIII then suggests going to Cosmo Canyon and to talk to Bugenhagen. After talking to Bugenhagen, Cloud and the others all agree to head to the Shell Village, where Aeris had confronted Sephiroth earlier on and Bugenhagen then agrees to join Cloud and the others for this upcoming mission. Bugenhagen then shows Cloud and the others his observatory and describes about the power of the Huge Materia and Materia as well. After boarding the Highwind with Bugenhagen, Cloud then looks for the Shell key, which is located somewhere underwater. After returning back to the Shell Village, Cloud and the others then learn that in the future, the planet will determine the fate of all life, whether it be healed by the mystical "white (Holy) materia" or face the devastating effects of meteor. Bugenhagen then reads some of the sacred carvings on the walls and then tells Cloud to use the Shell key and after Cloud puts the key in place, a mystical waterfall appears along with an image of Aeris. Cloud soon realizes that Aeris had known what was to be done all along, even though it ended up getting her killed. Cloud then is informed by Cait Sith that Rufus plans on using the Mako Cannon from Midgar to to kill Sephiroth, using all of the Mako power released in Midgar. After boarding the Highwind, Cloud and the others find out that the Diamond Weapon is approaching Midgar! After confronting and defeating the Weapon, Cloud and the others head back to the crater and they find out that the Shinra scientist Hojo, is planning to overload Midgar with Mako energy and is planning to use the energy for his own plans with Sephiroth after the damage the Weapon caused to Midgar. Cloud and the others head back to Midgar as they try to stop Hojo from putting Midgar in any further danger.

Cloud and the others follow Cait Sith after reaching Midgar and after passing through a series of underground train tunnels, Cloud and the others manage to confront Reno, Elena and Rude of the Turks again. After getting by them, Cloud and the others manage to run into General Heidagger and Scarlet of Shinra and they fight Cloud and the others by using their giant robot, Prod Clod. After defeating the robot, Cloud and the others then reach the top of the Mako Cannon control room where Hojo is and they confront him. Hojo reveals that he is actually Sephiroth's true father during the Jenova Project and then he engages into battle with Cloud and the others. After defeating Hojo, Cloud and the others then return back to the airship, after a series of major events. It becomes obviously clear that there are only 7 days left before meteor destroys the planet and Cloud then insists that everyone else to discover and realize their true reason of fighting, whether it be for the safety of the planet, the future of life or maybe personal reasons as well. Cloud asks that the others return to their place of origin to truly understand their main reason for fighting as Cloud believes that one cannot fight without understanding the true reasons for one's actions and motives. Everyone else surprisingly returns and then the final battle is set: It is now time to fight Sephiroth to the very end, ultimately, leaving the fate of their planet and the future of life in their hands. Should they succeed, Sephiroth would be no more and the planet can be saved from meteor. If they should fail then the planet would be destroyed and all life will cease to exist. This concludes disc 2, as Cloud and the others prepare to fight their final battle against Sephiroth that will ultimately determine the fate of the entire planet.

Disc 2 isn't as long as disc 1 but it still has plenty of major events that dictate the pace of the game. Now that disc 2 is done with, disc 3 holds the final battle for the planet and the final battle with Sephiroth will no doubt control the fate of the planet and all future life on it as well. Are you up to the challenge of fighting Sephiroth to the very end......... (End of Disc 2)

Disc 3

After the Highwind descends into the depths of the Northern Crater where Sephiroth is located, Cloud and the others then decide what they plan to do once inside the crater. After reaching a point where two paths cross in the crater, Cloud and the others split up into two parties to cover the two pathways. Once they meet up again, Cloud and the others then talk about what will happen to the planet and after that, Cloud forms one party to go deeper into the crater to find Sephiroth.
After fighting through various monsters, Cloud and his party then reach the deepest depths of the crater and they then fight Jenova's final form. Once Cloud and the others defeat Jenova once and for all, they then run into Sephiroth and Sephiroth then uses a wave of light to push some of Cloud's friends away. Sephiroth explains about his true intentions to destroy the planet and then Cloud and his party are ready to fight Sephiroth.

The final battle against Sephiroth is now set and Cloud and his party then confront and fight Sephiroth to try to defeat him once and for all. Sephiroth first battles Cloud using his Bizzaro form, which has several parts to it. There are several parts to Bizzaro Sephiroth, there's a main core area, Right magic and Left magic parts as well plus the head too. After defeating Bizzaro Sephiroth, Sephiroth then uses his final form to battle Cloud and his party. This final and most deadly form of Sephiroth is called Safer-Sephiroth and in this form, Sephiroth takes the form of a one-winged angel and looks quite godly like. Cloud and the others know that this is the real battle for the planet as they give it their all to save the planet from the evil Sephiroth and meteor. After a long and very hard-fought battle, Cloud and the others manage to defeat Safer-Sephiroth and then Cloud senses that Sephiroth is still alive, under the depths of the Lifestream.

Cloud ventures alone into the Lifestream where he confronts Sephiroth, in his standard form. Cloud does battle with Sephiroth for the last time in a duel to the very end that will determine the fate of the planet. After defeating Sephiroth with his Omnislash attack, Cloud then sees that Sephiroth is covered with blood and embarrassed of his defeat, Sephiroth then explodes and is finally defeated once and for all. Cloud then meets up with the others and they board the Highwind as they try to escape the crater. The crater then undergoes a violent reaction, caused by the Lifestream that causes the Highwind to go out of control and Cid hits a switch in desperation to try and steer the Highwind to safety. After the Highwind flies away safely, there are still many questions that remain: Will Holy be enough to destroy meteor and save the planet? What's going to happen to Midgar? The violent reaction caused by the Lifestream eventually flows away and then Holy appears to save the day. But shortly afterwards, Red XIII believes that it is too late for Holy and that meteor will end up destroying Midgar and the planet as well. Barret wonders if Midgar is going to be safe and all appears lost as meteor crashes into Midgar.
But then, Holy seems to go to work and it seems to stop meteor from doing any more damage to Midgar and then Cloud and the others realize that Midgar will be destroyed for the most part but they now know that at least the planet will continue to have life for many more years to become. Just before the credits roll, a vision of Aeris appears which symbolizes that Aeris knew how to stop meteor and Sephiroth by using the power of Holy. 500 years later, Red XIII, now grown-up with his kids then climb up on a cliff which oversees the view of Midgar, now destroyed but it now has lots of plants and nature growing around it which proves that life on the planet continues to exist and that the planet is still alive. During this time, Cloud and the others are now dead due to old age, presumably and at the end, you hear birds chirping which symbolizes that life continues to exist, maybe human life may have ended but animal life and other aspects of life continue to inhabit the planet. While the planet may be in ruin, it appears that Holy and the Lifestream had saved the planet from certain doom just 500 years earlier.

This is the end of disc 3 and therefore, it signals the end of Final Fantasy VII, at the very end, when you reach the star-studded black screen, the classic FF Prelude plays in a continuous loop. That's the end of FFVII, which is a great game that may cause many FF fanatics to play this game over and over again and this game is still one of the best FF games of all time.

Graphics

Considering that Final Fantasy VII was released in 1997, the graphics are quite good for it's time period and the FMV cinematics in the game are great for it's time. The character designs are quite well done and the character designs take on the usual super-deformed look that was found in previous FF games. The lush backgrounds in FFVII are quite detailed and they seem to blend in quite well along with the rest of the game with some backgrounds really making an impact during the course of the game. Gold Saucer is truly impressive in my opinion, the fireworks blasting in the blue sky and the balloons flying up as well are well done and they really help set the overall feeling and impact of Gold Saucer as well. While at times the graphics are fairly blocky, the graphics in FF7 are still pretty good considering it was released in 1997 so there's not really any reason to complain too much, really. If you don't like super-deformed characters much or if you just can't stand the super-deformed style, then you would just be better of playing through FF8 since in FF8, the characters are designed to realistic proportions and the graphics are much more realistic overall. But it seems most people really don't seem to mind about the super-deformed blocky character designs in FF7 that much, the storyline is quite deep and the characters are well-developed as well and the gameplay is pretty addicting, so graphics aren't the biggest issue in FF7. The details in the battles in FF7 are fairly good, with plenty of nice effects for flashy spells like Bolt3, Fire3, Comet and the limit breaks in the game are quite well animated for the most part. The summon animations in FF7 are very good in my opinion, Bahamut is well-done and other summons like Ramuh look pretty good in 3D form as well. A huge jump from FF6's summon animations, no doubt about that, but of course, that's because FF6 was released several years before FF7 anyways. Besides that fact that the characters are super-deformed and some blocky polygonal details in some areas and backgrounds, FF7's graphics are fluid, with some nice animations and backgrounds to keep gamers interested for the most part and the FMV scenes in the game look pretty good for FF7 during it's time.

Gameplay

The gameplay in FF7 is quite varied in my opinion and is quite good overall as well. In FF7, it is possible to equip weapons, armor and accessories for characters just like in previous FF games but the magic system has changed entirely. Gone is the Esper System in FF6 and now in FF7, the Esper System is now replaced with the Materia system. Basically, Materia works like magic, you can buy Materia from various shops during the course of the game and you can find Materia as well. There are several differents types of Materia throughout the game: Red Materia orbs are summon materia, which enables you to summon various summon monsters if equipped to your character. Blue Materia Orbs enable your character to defend well against certain attacks if equipped properly and it is more like support magic as well. Yellow Materia orbs are command Materia which enables you to use special commands like Steal, Morph, Deathblow and some others once you equip them properly. Purple Materia orbs are plus Materia, they enable your characters to have bonuses during the course of the game that raises your stats if you equip them for long periods of time, HP Plus, MP Plus and Cover are some plus Materia in the game. Finally, there's Green Materia orbs which are Magic Materia and are the most common in Final Fantasy VII. You can equip various Magic Materia to use various spells like Fire, Ice2, Cure and so on but you need to be careful as equipping too much Magic Materia may not be the best idea, depending on the situation. You can see that there are many different combinations of Materia to use throughout the game, sometimes experimenting the combinations can lead you to discover your own deadly Materia combos as well! This is what makes the gameplay in FF7 so varied and deep as well and not only that, but many other things in FF7 are good too like the limit breaks in the battle system, just to name a few. Basically, the gameplay in FF7 is what you would expect to find in any FF game, the usual equipping weapons/armor, etc, but add Materia to the mix and a well-polished battle engine as well and you've got yourself a deep system of gameplay which only a few games can provide.

Storyline

The storyline in FF7 is pretty good, but not as good as FF6's in my opinion. Sure, the storyline in FF7 is quite deep but the storyline kind of drags on after a while, especially during the 2nd disc for the most part. There are several twists and turns throughout the storyline of FF7 but for me, it's not as significant and great as the storyline twists found in FF6, but the events in the storyline in FF7 are still decent though. Most of the time, you end up chasing Sephiroth and trying to put a stop to the Shinra, while it may seem creative, sometimes it makes you wonder if Square could have been a little more creative in some ways with the storyline of FF7. While it's great and all, I still think the storyline in FF7 could've been a touch more creative, don't you think? Besides that, the characters in FF7 all have their own backstory and the game goes into a fair amount of detail with each character. For example, FF7 definitely spends a lot of time with Tifa's and Cloud's past and the game also spends a fair amount of time on the other characters origins and throughout the game, you will realize that some characters undergo some changes as well. Sephiroth is an interesting study as well, throughout the game, you will get to know his character and personality and you will grow to really hate Sephiroth later on in the game since he's the main villain in the game and does a pretty good job of being the lead badguy in the game. Sephiroth made a pretty good villain in my opinion, while some people may say that he's the coolest villain in any RPG game, I will honestly have to disagree on this one but I still feel that Sephiroth is a good villain, nevertheless. The Turks made pretty good supporting villains but they really lacked a backstory for the most part and you don't learn anything about their past either but their personality made them quite popular with a fair amount of FFVII gamers due to their attitude and personality. But the game still has it's moments though, there are some events in FF7 that are unforgettable while some events don't make as big of an impact in your head as others. In my opinion, the whole storyline in FF7 is pretty good until you reach the ending, which in my mind is a total disappointment and it's very controversial in my opinion. I mean, you end up going through all that trouble just for an ending which is not very clear and it's incomplete as well, let's face it, the ending in FF7 didn't have enough closure to the story, nuff said about that one! The ending to FF7 is very controversial and many people who have finished the game all have different views and opinions on the ending, most people say the ending sucks, which I agree on that one but there are a few gamers who believe they fully understood the ending and they believe that the FF7 ending is pretty good. But the majority of people who have played FF7 believe the ending was a total disappointment and I believe you can debate about the FF7 ending forever, since the ending truly was incomplete and not very clear, unlike FF8's ending and other FF endings as well. It's a shame, really, because if it wasn't for the disappointing ending, the storyline in FF7 could've been much better in my opinion, the ending spoils the possibility of another FF6 in my mind. But still, while FF7 may not reach the heights set by FF6, it still is another solid FF game by Square and it still stands the test of time, even as we speak.

Sound

Most of the music tracks in Final Fantasy VII are great in my opinion, but the bad thing is that the music in the game is 16-bit quality to say the least. Lot's of character themes are quite well done and some tracks in the game are very catchy like the Junon Parade and stuff like that but I figure that overall, the musical tracks found in FFVII don't fit the overall emotion and mood as well as some other previous FF games like FF4 and FF6. Don't count me wrong, some themes like Aeris' and the Highwind theme actually do give a good sense of emotion for the most part but in FF7, there aren't that many tracks that make as big of an impact in the game as some of the older FFs. I find that some themes like North Corel, just don't seem to fit very well but they don't sound that bad even though it doesn't give a good sense of feeling and emotion, nevertheless. There are a mix of different types of musical themes in Final Fantasy VII, some are classical orchrastrated stuff while some other tracks are more upbeat and more of an intense feeling like the boss theme in FF7. The sound effects on the other hand aren't too shabby but sometimes they really sound unrealistic, like when Cloud jumps from ladder to ladder, it doesn't make too much sense in my mind. But the sound effects in the battles and in other areas are well done though so it's not too much of a big problem anyways but of course the sound in FFVII ain't perfect of course, so don't expect a perfect score anyways. The standard battle theme is ok but Gold Saucer's theme is great, it does fit in the happier, upbeat type of mood that you might expect from a large theme park like Gold Saucer. I think Nobuo Uematsu did a pretty good job with the music in FF7 although, it's not quite his best work in my opinion, but after composing music for many FF games already, you would expect him to possibly lose some of his quality since in FF4 and FF6, Uematsu really showed the gaming world what he is capable of. In my mind, it's already tough to beat such classic tracks from FF4 and FF6 but the tracks in FF7 still manage to hold their own and some are still typical Uematsu greatness in my mind. Some people claim that the battle theme when you fight Safer-Sephiroth sounds like silly polka or circus music but I totally disagree with those views. The theme when you fight Sephiroth may sound like 16-bit quality but the latin lyrics and the haunting orchestrated musical style really sets the dramatic tone and intense feeling of the battle against Sephiroth. Most people agree that the music when you fight Sephiroth fits very well with the dramatic and tense mood of the final battle to save the planet, which I do agree on. So overall, the music in FF7 is pretty good but the 16-bit quality and the fact that most music tracks in FF7 doesn't give a good sense of feeling and emotion makes the music in FF7 pretty good but not excellent in my opinion.

Fun Factor

Many people believe that Final Fantasy VII is one of the most addicting RPG games that they have ever played and I have would have to agree with them for the most part. There are plenty of sidequests and other fun mini-games to pass the time in FF7 and they can prove to be quite enjoyable and fun as well. Unlike the previous FF games, Final Fantasy VII has lot's of sidequests and little extra things to do to pass the time throughout the game and the sidequests can prove quite challenging, unlike the other FF games where most of the sidequests are a walk in the park and are pretty easy in my opinion. Some sidequests in FF7 actually have some meaning to it, for example, if you finish Yuffie's sidequest in Wutai, you will learn more about her past and you will also learn more about Wutai's past as well. Other sidequests in FF7 are just plain fun, like the stolen Materia sidequest for example, which is quite enjoyable in my opinion but it's quite hard, since you have to fight with no Materia for several battles, including a boss battle as well. Then, there's always the "finding Vincent" sidequest in the Shinra Mansion in Nibelheim that is quite difficult as well but it can be important, since if you beat it, Vincent will join your party and you can get the Odin Summon Materia as well as a few other goodies if you successfully beat the sidequest. True, other FF games like FF6 had some pretty good sidequests as well but there aren't as many and they aren't integrated into the plot as much as the sidequests in FF7 were. And for those of you who really want challenge in FF7, there's always the sheer challenge and enjoyment of fighting the other 3 Weapons in FF7: Ultima Weapon, Ruby Weapon and the Emerald Weapon which are all quite tough, except for Ultima Weapon anyways. Ruby Weapon and Emerald Weapon are impossible to beat without certain Materia and you will need to be strong enough to withstand their powerful attacks and they are more tougher then Sephiroth himself! Well those are pretty much all the major sidequests in FF7, anyways, there are plenty of cool mini-games and fun stuff in FF7 as well such as the games in Gold Saucer. I find that most of the games in Gold Saucer are quite addictive and some are extremely challenging and tough in my opinion, such as the arm wrestling game and the B-ball game. I find that the snowboarding mini-game and the 3D battler game are probably the two most enjoyable games in the Wonder Square of Gold Saucer but my personal favorite in GS is the submarine battle, yeah sure, you guys may all think it's rather boring and it's slow-paced but I find it quite easy and since I'm good at it, I actually find it very fun. Probably one of the most addictive extras in FF7 is the fact that you can breed and mate chocobos as well as race them in the Chocobo Races at Gold Saucer. You can rent some stables at the chocobo farm for around 10000 GIL per stable and once you caught a chocobo you can send it to the chocobo farm where you can feed it and care for it. Once you got one male and one female chocobo, you can mate them and then sometimes, their child can inherit some special abilities, depending on what class of chocobos you mate. You also can race your chocobos at Gold Saucer and you can win GP and prizes after winning some races which is quite cool and fun in my opinion. FF7 is an extremely addictive and fun RPG game in my opinion and it has plenty of sidequests and mini-games to keep you busy for many hours, I even heard of some people that are going for FF7 perfection and they have played almost a couple of hundred hours in their FF7 file, trying to do all the sidequests and getting all the items and some other special stuff as well. Anyways, FF7 is a very fun RPG game, probably one of the most addictive RPG games ever made.

Overall

Final Fantasy VII truly deserves recognition as it was the game that broke the North American RPG market wide-open with a great storyline, good characters, solid music, excellent FMV scenes for it's time and it was a very addictive game overall and to many current RPG gamers, FFVII was the first RPG game they ever played and it caused many casual gamers to like RPGs and many gamers were instantly hooked on FFVII when it first came out. FFVII is regarded by many as the "breakout" game in the RPG market in North America which paved way for other RPGs to be released in North America like Final Fantasy VIII, Grandia II, Skies of Arcadia, the Lunar series, Wild Arms 2 and many others as well. While FFVII isn't the best FF game in my standards, it definitely still manages to hold it's own even now and it definitely ranks up there as one of the greatest RPG games ever made. Final Fantasy VII is a wonderful production and is a great effort by Square which should be considered one of the biggest "breakout" games of all time which revolutionized gaming like Super Mario Bros, Street Fighter and Metal Gear Solid, just to name a few. Final Fantasy VII may not be exactly the greatest RPG games ever made but it still manages to hold it's own and to many RPG gamers, FFVII is one of the most addictive RPG games ever made and many believed that FFVII caused an RPG "Renaissance" in North America. FFVII revolutionized the RPG world and it's definitely worth checking out since FFVII is now part of Sony's "Greatest Hits" lineup and you can get a copy of FFVII for around $20-25 bucks nowadays, definitely worth the buy in my opinion and FFVII is one of Square's most important releases in recent memory. With all that said, this concludes my FFVII review and for me, FFVII was the first real RPG game that I had ever played and it instantly made me like RPG games, so kudos to Square for the effort they put into making FFVII, a "breakout" game, no doubt about that.

Ratings (Compare w/ other games)

GRAPHICS: 8.5/10 8.5 While the FMV sequences and game graphics were pretty good for it's time, sometimes some areas are a little blocky and not all gamers like the super-deformed style in FF7. Otherwise, the graphics in FFVII are pretty good and they seem to make a good impression to most people.
GAMEPLAY: 17.5/20 8.8 The gameplay in FFVII is quite deep and varied and the Materia system in FFVII is quite customizable and gamers can spend quite a bit of time perfecting their Materia combos and creating new ones as well. The battle system is well-polished and overall, the gameplay system is very deep and only a few games can match up to FFVII's very deep and varied Materia System.
STORYLINE: 14/20 7.0 The storyline in Final Fantasy VII ain't that bad, it's not bad but I must admit that at some points during the game, the storyline seems to slow down a bit and it makes you wonder if Square could've been a little more creative with the storyline as well. But the big minus in the scoring for the storyline category here is the dreaded, incomplete and disappointing ending in FF7. Which is a shame because if it wasn't for the ending, the storyline in FF7 could've gotten a much higher grade in my opinion.
SOUND: 7.5/10 7.5 There are some musical tracks in FF7 that are quite catchy and upbeat and some themes sound absolutely amazing like the Highwind theme and Aeris' theme. The sound is pretty good in my opinion but in FF7, most musical tracks don't fit the mood and feeling of the current situation as well as it should be in many areas. Also, add in the fact that the sound quality is 16-bit type quality makes the rating for sound go down by a little bit as well. The sound is pretty good, but not quite Uematsu's best work though.
FUN FACTOR: 9.5/10 9.5 Final Fantasy VII is one of the most addictive RPG games of all-time in my opinion and with plenty of interesting sidequests, fun mini-games in Gold Saucer plus breeding Chocobos, FFVII will last a long time and it's lots of fun to play and many gamers may never ever grow tired of this game.

OVERALL: 57/70 8.1 FFVII is a great game which revolutionized the entire RPG games market in North America which appeals to the hardcore RPG games as well as the casual gamer. With a good storyline, great characters and memorable events and FMV scenes, FFVII is definitely a good purchase for any gamer and while it's not exactly the best FF game in my standards, it still manages to hold it's own, even to this very day.

FF VII International

FF VII International was released in Japan only, and it features a couple of tweaks found in the US version, such as the pointer.  It includes a fourth disc with artwork, and lots of other extras.

FF VII Snowboarding

This title, released on March 29, 2005, is basically a simple port of the snowboarding mini-game found in Gold Saucer from Final Fantasy VII. It is for mobile cell phones (USA). The game plays very much like a 3D racing title. There are some unlockable stages based on certain conditions, whether it be time-based or in reference to the amount of balloons collected for each stage for instance. In total, there are three courses in the game along with an extra bonus course. However, there are no other special features in this cellphone game.
