About (No Spoilers)

While Zell is a short-tempered character who tends to lose his cool quite often, he has a good sense of humor and likes to take things less seriously unlike Squall.  Zell joined Balamb Garden to assume his grandfather’s role and Zell is quite a strong character in terms of attack.  Zell also becomes a SeeD along with Squall in the early parts of the game and he sometimes gets into trouble, causing further ordeals accidentally.

Major Relations

As a young boy, Zell was constantly picked on by Seifer when they were both growing up in the orphanage.  From this experience, Zell later on built up a rivalry with Seifer and both don’t get along well at all, in fact they seem more like mortal enemies.  Other than Seifer, Zell doesn’t have any other major relations with anyone else in the game other than the SeeDs in Balamb Garden as well as his mom back home in his hometown of nearby Balamb.  Zell appears to have a lot of respect for his mom and they get along really well throughout the game.

Character Developments (Spoilers)

Zell is quite a spoiled boy and he joins Balamb Garden to train hard to become a strong fighter and he also joins to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps as a loyal and brave soldier.  He likes to crack a few jokes here and there and provides some of FF8’s comedy relief, although he does have trouble containing his anger and temper during some parts of the game.  Zell is directly involved in the conflict between Sorceress Edea and SeeD and thrives to fight for the cause of a free and peaceful world.

Review

To me, Zell is a decent character although personality-wise, I didn’t like him too much as he seemed like a hothead and has some trouble controlling his emotions.  Even still, he likes to look at the lighthearted side of things and likes to have some fun and he doesn’t take things that seriously though.  Besides this, Zell has limited character development in the game, which is too bad since I thought he could’ve used a little more development in his emotions and motives.

Weapons

Zells’ Limit Breaks are very similar to Tifa’s from FF7.  The only real noticeable difference is that Zell has a couple of different attacks compared to Tifa and that to execute them properly, you need to input different button combinations.  He can learn new Limit Break attacks by collecting different issues of Combat King magazines which are scattered in different places throughout the game.  While not entirely powerful, he can unleash quick attacks on an enemy or a boss and they come in handy, especially if you need some quick attacks to drain away the enemy’s HP.

Zell’s Limit Breaks:
 Punch Rush
 Booya
 Heel Drop
 Mach Kick
 Dolphin Blow
 Meteor Strike
 Burning Rave
 Meteor Barret
 Different Beat
