Vivi Ornitua

About (No Spoilers)

     Vivi is a young Black Mage who knows some powerful spells to his credit and he’s the only Black Mage on the world of Gaia that isn’t a servant to Queen Brahne.  However, Black Mages are feared and respected and Vivi is quite shy but he’s also fairly clumsy and innocent at heart.  He also strives to figure out where he came from, much like Zidane.

Major Relations

     Early on, Vivi begins to make friends in Zidane and Steiner and since he’s a Black Mage, Vivi is feared by many people in the world of Gaia as they mistake him for being one of Queen Brahne’s evil Black Mages.  Over the course of the game, Vivi learns to make friends with the other party members while remaining a faithful friend to Zidane and Steiner.  Vivi also later on stumbles in a Black Mage Village and learns to make friends with some of them as well but otherwise, Vivi doesn’t really have close relations with the other characters in the game.

Character Developments (Spoilers)

     For a good portion of the game, Vivi is a clumsy but kind-hearted Mage who manages to be caught up in Zidane’s cause early on and he also strives to learn more about where he came from.  Vivi is fairly shy and lonely for the most part but later on, he learns to appreciate friends and begins to make friends in Zidane as well as a few other characters.  While he seems shy, Vivi learns to overcome it and his powerful Black Magic proves to be an asset to the party.  Eventually, Vivi overcomes his mysterious origins and understands the true meaning of life and existence later on.

Review

     Vivi is a shy and clumsy character but he is well respected as he is a Black Mage and his magic is quite powerful as well.  While he’s very weak physically, he makes up for that with his strong magic defense and magic spells and over the course of the game, he will learn the mystery behind his past, much like what Zidane did.  To me, Vivi is one of the best Black Mages ever in any FF game and remains one of the most popular FF9 characters to this day.  He is still an important character throughout most of the adventure though.

Weapons/Armor/Accessories

     Vivi can equip staffs as weapons and while they are very weak in terms of physical attack power, Vivi makes up for that with his powerful Black Magic spells.  Vivi can’t quite equip very heavy armor, although he can equip basic armor as well as Armlets and Mage hats and his magic defense if fairly high.
