Introduction

For centuries, the Focus Tower had stood at the very heart of the world. It had been a center for trade and knowledge, and the people of the world had met there to peacefully settle their differences. But on one warm summer day, powerful monsters battled their way into the tower, stole the 4 Crystals of the Earth and then took off with the magical coins that had kept the tower's doors unlocked.

With the tower doors sealed behind them, the monsters relaxed their guard and turned their attention to the Crystals. As they basked in the radiant glow of the Crystals, the monsters grew stronger, meaner and even more wicked. The more light the monsters consumed, the more the world was drained of it's warmth and color. Tremors soon shook the land. The sky grew cloudy and dark. The seasons went berserk. The monsters appeared everywhere and terrorized the people. The world was thrown into total chaos. Something had to be done...

Enter Benjamin. Benjamin was the most normal youngster you could imagine. Like most responsible villagers his age, he arose at the crack of dawn to take his family's livestock to the upper meadow graze. Other kids teased him because he read while tending his heard, and because a village Elder had taken him in as a promising student. Although Benjamin seemed mature beyond his years, he still dreamed of being more then he was--faster, stronger and more daring. Little did he know his wishes were about to be
fulfilled the hard way...

Full Story (Spoilers)

If this game wasn't titled Final Fantasy, you would have never known that is one. This game is a lot like one of the FF legends on the Gameboy. It has no elements that are found in any other FF. Such as, only two members in your party, and you can only get specific weapons that get stronger through the game. It is relatively short, but may be fun if you take the time to get through all the dungeons, and pay attention to the little script that it has. The story takes place on a world that is ruled by the 4 crystals of fire, water/ice, wind and earth. You are sent by The Elder to regain all the powers of the crystals to establish the earth to its original glory. You will encounter several different characters from different towns and villages. Each character has their own specific weapon, and will eventually give it to you so you can then use the ability of the weapon to progress further into the game. Since the world is controlled by these crystals, the part of the world that is in it's control takes the adjective of the crystal, such as the fire crystal which is located near the Fireburg by the volcano, or the water crystal which is located near Aquaria by the Ice Pyramid, and so on and so forth. You have to guide the main character which is named to your liking, if you don't like the name Benjamin, from Level Forest where you find a female character named Kaeli which is a master of the bow, and then you have to head to the Bone Dungeon where you get the earth crystal. Then for the first time you enter the Focus Tower where the doors await locked to different element territories. You have to first save the crystal of the specific door and acquire it's coin to unlock the door to the territory. Then you have to head to Aquaria where you get another character and drop your old one after you get their weapon. Your weapons are a sword, grapple, bombs and axe. You can upgrade the weapon 2 more times after you get them for the first time to make them stronger. The same for your armor as well. Your armor varies from a necklace, cap, body armor and a shield. You can also get items and magic. The magic is determined through 3 different categories. Healing, black book magic and the strongest black orb magic. You can get regular items that can help you heal and cure you, and also items that can refresh you and revive your MP to it's normal potential. You also have to collect special items to progress further and collect crests so you can pass to secret areas to get items or just to get to villages or caves faster. You then have to travel to the Ice temple and acquire that crystal. It’s the same throughout the game. You gain a character for going to the next element's layer, and then you get their weapon. You then drop the character once you get to the new element's area and gain a new character. The sign of if you're doing a good job, is if you pass the new character's level before you drop him/her. This means that you will have no problem fighting the end boss of each area. In this game, you can never get a game over, unless you decide to quite after you die. But if you die when your fighting a monster or boss, you can decide if you want a game over or to try at the monster again, obviously you would try to fight the damn thing till you kill it. Make sure you save though after every boss, because sometimes my power (My house :P) will go out and then I’d have to fight him all over again. But the other plus about this game is that you can save where ever, and whenever you want. So anyway... Once you get done getting the water crystal you will then need to go the Fireburg, and then Windia, and then after you open the Rainbow Road to Spencer’s Cave you can save Kaeli's Dad Mac, from his ship that is infested with monsters. After you save him and his ship, the area below you in the wind territory, which looks like a never-ending abyss actually fills with water. Now here I thought that there was this never ending drop to the center of the world :). The scenery of this area looks a lot better once you get water in there. Once you defeat the end boss of the game, you are then going to voyage far away on Mac's ship. To your surprise, your buddy Tristam, who you met on your journey joins you, since he always loves an adventure, and he also loves to treasure hunt. I was a little disappointed in the games ending although I knew it was obviously not going to be some huge finale since the majority of the game's story line wasn't developed. I can't say I didn't have any fun, but it's definitely not the top FF on my list.

Analysis/Ratings

Ratings (Compare w/ other games)

GRAPHICS: 7/10 7 The graphics I think could have been better, since it is on the SNES. It looks more like it was made on the NES. Therefore, I’m going to have to give the game's graphics a rating of 7/10.
GAMEPLAY: 20/20 10 The gameplay was nice. You got to use your weapons on the field for special purposes such as chopping trees down with your axe, using your grapple to reach areas with no doors or stairs. I give the gameplay a 20/20.
STORYLINE: 18/20 9 The story line was pretty good, but I think that they could have done a little better trying to make you get into the action and feel like your really in it. I give storyline an 18/20.
SOUND: 5/10 5 The sound and music is alright, but if your in a battle... The music gets a little annoying after a while, and often I found myself having to mute the TV so I could actually fight without having to plug my ears. I give the sound/music a 5/10.
FUN FACTOR: 5/10 5 The fun kinda wore away after you got down the pattern. You had to go through levels and levels of dungeons... Fight, fight, fight... The further you get, the more levels there are. At the end, all I was looking forward to was finally beating it. I give the fun factor a 5/10.

OVERALL: 55/70 7.9 Overall, the game was alright. I have seen better FF's in my time, and I’m sure you have too. I took the time to buy this classic off of Ebay for $32. I was really curious what this game was like since I have only recently (The beginning of this year) heard of it. If you are sure you want to get this game, you should make sure you have a good reason. I mostly bought it because I collect FF's. However, don't make me hold you back, it's a good game for being an oldie. Maybe a lot of people think I’m being too strict on this old classic, but I do a lot of classic game playing, and I know what is good. This isn't one of my recommended games, but like I said earlier, don't take my word for it; just check it out for yourself. This game would get a final overall rating of 55/70.
