Episode 6 - "Genesis: That Which
Protects Life"
Note before I begin: This episode referred to Lisa's martial arts
power as "Kigenjutsu", translated into defender of life. However, "Kigenjutsu"
also is
called "Genesis", creator of life. From here on out, I will refer to "Kigenjutsu"
as the power of Genesis.
With Cid and Kaze left behind, our trio leaves the subway to see yet
another
"part" of the Inner World. As they surface, however, this Inner World turns
out to be the strangest they've encountered yet: a giant desert, complete
with erupting pillars of fire. As Ai, Yu, Lisa, and Chobi (yes, Yu finally
named the chocobo at the beginning of this episode) marvel at the strange
new part of the Inner World, the opening to the subway is swallowed up by
the sand! Yu and Ai attempt to dig their way back to the train, knowing that
their parents would never be in such a hot and dry place. Lisa, however,
senses a tremendous swelling of energy, and pulls the kids away just in time
to be spared from the pillar of flame erupting before them. That was a close
one...
As our heroic trio continues their search for Joe and Marie, at the
Count's place the Demon Swordsman White Cloud has gone missing, and Oscar is
getting the brunt of the Count's rage. Hungus has taken it upon himself to
try and destroy Kaze once again, but at only 1/10 his original size and left
to wait until he returns to normal, the Count flatly refuses his offer.
Helba, however, decides it best that she should take on the task of finding
Demon Gunman, using her newest weapon, Hug-hug-chan. Just hearing the name
instills fear into my heart...
Back into the desert, Chobi's exhausted and thirsty, but Lisa refuses to let
him have water in hopes of finding an oasis nearby for everyone to drink in-
which, to everyone's relief, he does- and all seems well. Despite not
finding another subway entrance to leave this desolate world, they've found
water, which is good enough for now.
Or so they think...
While on the way to annoy Kaze, Helba finds our happy trio in the oasis,
joyously enjoying the water. Intent on feeding their energy to hug-hug-chan,
she drops yet another crystal bomb on the peaceful lake. This time around,
it's a giant tree harboring seed pods- except when they hit the ground, they
turn into giant flesh-eating monsters!! Cue the battle music!!
As Ai, Yu, Lisa, and Chobi try to run from the evil seed pods, Lisa decides
on a different tactic- using her Genesis and blasting the monsters away with
a single sonic boom. Ai and Yu make no time in trying to escape, but fall
off the cliff and back into the oasis with the help of Chobi, leaving Lisa
to fend for herself against another wave of pod-monsters...
(flashback)
"If you spill the water, you'll have to start all over again..."
Lisa is snapped back into reality as a mysterious vine wraps around her and
ties her to a tree, and Helba finally shows herself. Her plan: to use Lisa's
energy to feed hug-hug-chan. As the Hayakawa twins look on, Ai tries to use
Pochepoke in hopes of finding something to save Lisa, but amidst a computer,
rice cooker, wooden sandals, a globe, a teakettle, a brush, and a few books,
their position looks pretty hopeless. Things get even worse when Helba
notices the two trying to escape, and quickly sends the pod-monsters to
finish them off. Things look pretty bad...
(another flashback)
"You can't read nature's flow of energy like that, Lisa. Create a void in
your mind. Feel nature around you. Only those who can read the energy flow
are allowed to use it. That is Genesis, the defender of life..."
Lisa then uses her magic once again to break the tree, and the vine, to
pieces, letting her escape from the grasp of the Gaudium deathlord. And with
a single backflip and some fancy hand signals, she lays the Genesis
smackdown on the pod-monsters surrounding Ai and Yu. Unfortunately, Helba
has already sent reinforcements, and escape seems impossible from the
oasis...
(yet another flashback)
"Within nature, diverse types of energy flow. To not use something so
abundant... humans are foolish beings..."
With that, Lisa decides to use the water to her advantage- using her power
of Genesis, she blasts the water every which way, turning it into fire to
destroy the seeds... but isn't that a bit much? Was she really planning on
burning water?
(flashback)
"You don't understand? Why the balance of your wooden buckets was upset. The
water in each bucket holds its own flow of energy. You were trying to deal
with them in the same manner, which is why the balance was upset."
"The flow of energy is different?"
"It's not only in water. Energy is something that always changes. If you
read the flow improperly, unthinkable things can occur. That is nature,
Lisa..."
Lisa finally understands that because of the misreading of energy, along
with the energy of elenium in the water, caused the oasis to burn. But
before she can do another thing about it, the water beneath them swallows
the trio whole, and Ai seems to be under its incredible grasp...
All the while, a stone-faced Kaze looks on...
As the group finally reaches the surface, Ai remains unconcious and not
breathing. Unfortunately, Lisa's incredibly horrible CPR is doing nothing
for her, and the pod-monsters have returned for revenge. Luckily, Kaze has
appeared on the scene to do battle, but even more unfortunately, his Demon
Gun refuses to transform, causing him to be swallowed whole by the monsters!
Yu looks on in horror while Lisa is left with one last resort- she uses the
energy of nature to save Ai from death, and is ready to fight the
seed-monsters with her life energy, with Ai and Yu's life hanging in the
balance, until a small light emits from one of the seeds...
"I have chosen Soil for the likes of you!
The one who tears apart boulders with its teeth... Shark Gray!
The one who envelops all thirst... Water Blue!
Finally, the one who feeds on emptiness... Crusher White!
Cry! Summon Creature! Bismark!"
A giant column of water blasts from all sides of the oasis, destroying seed
pods left and right. As the giant whale Bismark appears before them, Helba's
crystal balloon is engulfed in water and disappears with the whale as the
column evaporates into the skies above... and all is well once again.
With the oasis disappeared and the flame pillars gone, Lisa, Ai, and Yu try
to find the way to the next part of the Inner World... but where's Kaze gone
to? Unfortunately that's the only question they're able to ask, because the
ground from underneith them has dropped out, and now they're falling into
the dark abyss of the next episode!
... To Be Continued...
Good points: This episode was in my opinion a great character
developer and a key episode in the series because we got to know a lot about
the mysteries of Kigenjutsu (Genesis), the Defender of Life. Not only that,
but we got to see a lot of sweet pyrotechnics, the numerous powers of
Genesis, and Lisa at her fighting best. There was even a small bit of
tension in the last few minutes, with Kaze swallowed up and Ai down for the
count. But you know that they couldn't die that early in the series!
Bad points: That doesn't mean, however, there were some flaws. First
off, it's back to the formula. You didn't see it so much this episode
because it was Lisa's turn in the spotlight, but it was still there. And
because this was a big character developer, plot had to suffer this episode-
seriously- but I'm betting my chips on the next episode, which I am dying to
watch...
Kenji's Score: 6.5/10
