Episode 7 - Subway: Enemy of the
Dimensional Tunnel
Last episode, we left our
heroes falling through a hole in the desert of flames, their destination
unknown. You know they couldnt've died, after all, we still have eighteen
more episodes to go through. Underneith the desert of flames, they fall in a
pile of sand- just enough to cushion their fall. As they find Kaze alive and
well (he always shows up at the most opportune times), Chobi's
interdimensional clock Isabel tells the group that a subway is nearby and
ready for departure. Yu is still convinced there's a warm heart locked away
somewhere in the cold Kuroki Kaze, and grabs him by the hand...
"Everything will be end in the next fight," he tells Anna, still holding
onto her hand. "Everything..." and as tears trickle down both his face and
hers...
Kaze awakens from his
daydreaming to find Yu holding his hand, safe in the compartment of the
subway. As they all begin to settle down for the long trip ahead, Kaze
notices that he's being watched from the next compartment. Ai and Yu, upon
seeing the strange girl, decide to give chase, hoping that the person might
just give information about their mother and father- or perhaps be a
subordinate of the Count...
After chasing her down,
Lisa warns that the girl isn't human, despite her appearance. But after
Chobi breaks the ice by tugging on Ai's pigtails, we hear the laugh that
will forever sound like nails scratching on a blackboard. Thus is the
group's first encounter with Ru Rufus, and although it seems like a positive
one, she mentions that "once you see me in my true form, you'll hate me for
sure..."
Ru mentions a few interesting things to note about the Interdimensional
Subway. First off, people ride it, bu t very seldom. She's not always one to
ride it herself, for reasons we will see later. She also mentions that a
girl is the driver of the subway. When Ai and Yu go to see the front car,
however, they see only complex machinery, a bunch of wires, and the emblem
of the great scientist Cid. But if Cid built the Subway, Lisa wondered, why
then does he want to see it so badly? She has no more time to think on that,
however, as Ru senses something ominuous coming from the folds of time and
space...
From behind the Subway, a hole opens between the dimensions of the Inner
World. From it, a blinding light, an extreme amount of energy, a sense of
pure malice. The greatest power the world has ever known... even the most
experienced Final Fantasy gamer whispers its name for fear of its fury
crushing him to bits... the one, the invincible... OMEGA!!!
For those of you that are
unable to comprehend the power of Omega, Ru explains that her world- and
everything in it was devoured by Omega. Torn to pieces, and spread across
the Inner World, it was left to die. Needless to say, that plan didn't
happen- the pieces of Omega are trying to collect themselves into the
formidable beast it was in order to destroy anything they desire. In fact,
the thing that came through the Interdimensional Tunnel is only the NAIL of
Omega. The nail!! "Running away from that thing... is impossible..." Ru
says. "Omega won't stop until everything is destroyed."
As a train car breaks off into the abyss of the dimension, Ai, Yu, Chobi,
Lisa, Ru, and Kaze hold on for dear life. "When Omega walks, the world will
sink... when Omega flies, the world breaks!" At this rate, everyone's going
to die a hideous death within Omega. Ru decides to pull her trump card.
Getting a mirror from Pochepoke, Ru transforms from a supposed normal human
girl to a wolf-girl! But instead of scaring Ai and Yu, the Hayakawa twins
are more in awe than horror. She jumps onto the top of the subway, and
gathering all the energy she has, uses a giant light beam on Omega, in hopes
of deterring its movement. Inside the train compartment, a silent Kaze looks
into the light, remembering his last moments with his beloved Anna...
"Everything will end in
the last fight," He tells her, holding her hand. "Everything..." And with
that, they separate, fading into the darkness...
Kaze awakens from his
trip down memory lane to find Omega still alive, and using its powers to
bend time and space, sends Ru into the dark abyss. Yu, Ai, and Lisa look
upon Kaze with scorn, saying that he should have fought with Ru to destroy
Omega. "Are you even human?" Lisa asks. "Isn't your Demon Gun meant to save
people?" All of a sudden, the Demon Gun listens to Lisa's wishes, and Kaze
opens it up...
"I've chosen the Soil for
the likes of you!
The grinding teeth of
incandescence... Cardinal Red!
The gale of red lotus
flowers... Dark Crimson!
Finally, the strength of
steel... Burnt Sienna!
Burn it all! Summoned
creature... Ifrit!"
In all its magnificence,
Ifrit uses its power to launch a fireball at Omega. It doesn't even make a
scratch, however, and Omega fights back, using dark bolts of lightning to
ward it away...
"The summoned creature might lose!" Yu screams.
Ifrit is not finished, however, as he launches an even bigger fireball
towards Omega. Nevertheless, Omega remains immune to such an attack and
continues its onslaught on Ifrit.
"Even the power of the
Demon Gun can't stop Omega?" Lisa asks.
"No matter who the
opponent is, their movement will be stopped by Ifrit's raging flames." Kaze
reassures.
In a final attack, Ifrit
uses Hellfire, breaking through Omega's outer shell, to destroy the inner
core. A blinding light, and then nothing...
Ai, Yu, and Lisa awaken
to find Omega's nail destroyed and Kaze missing. From behind them, a lone
train car with Ru inside comes from the ether, connecting the train back
together. After a reunion with the twins, Ru quickly becomes obsessed with
Kaze, knowing that it was fate that they were to meet and that he was
supposed to save her. All seems well as the Subway approaches its next stop.
"It seems that Omega has disappeared too," Lisa mentions. "No. It wouldn't
die from only this.
"Omega will come again."
... TO BE CONTINUED...
Good points: By far the best episode to date. The return of a fantastic
enemy, the possibility of an astounding plotline, the strange recurrence of
Kaze's lover Anna, and the cool ending song make this episode a winner.
Hands down.
Bad points: Ru Rufus. Need I say more? No.
Kenji's Score: 8/10
