Oscar, Work that Never Ends Episode 9
"A new enemy, dueling in the sea of sand, and Soil, the heart of the Demon
Gun. A forgotten memory, a past that had been sealed. Comes the next
assassin..."
Well, The Twins are spacing out, and Kaze is ignoring a love-struck Ru, so
Lisa is pondering over the connection between the two beasts and our very
own Black Wind and White Cloud. This is one of the cooler
montage-video-sequence-things in the show I think, also a way to smack the
viewer over the head and scream "THERE'S A CONNECTION HERE!". As she comes
back to reality, Ai and Yu have a quick talk with Lisa, in which Ai points
out that she thinks Lisa is in love with Kaze-sama. And so the journey
continues, now with a typical Final Fantasy 'I love him, no I don't, wait,
maybe...' and '...'.
When the group leaves the subway, Ru happily exclaims that she knows this
place. Were I her, I wouldn't be happy to be there, a bunch of weird, masked
guys are lines up near the walls, assembling and disassembling something.
They don't respond to anything or anyone, so our heroes end up lounging
around in a confused manner with Kaze moping sullenly for good measure,
unaware that Crux is watching them(so it's only a matter of time before a
Deathlord shows up).
The Count wants the pieces of Omega, but no one seems able to find them, and
he's currently being given a barrage of excuses from his underlings. Hungus
is being Hungus, Pisto is being lazy, and The Count manages to score a few
points in my opinion by smacking Helba across the room for being useless. He
declares that none of them can return to Gaudium until Omega has been found,
at which point, Oscar jumps in and points out that it's nearly impossible to
locate all of Omega's crystals. The Count respond by throwing a fork at him
and Oscar backs down. After The Count orders Oscar to go and search as well,
Crux appears and whispers "ku-ku-ru-yu" which means nothing to us, but
apparently means something to Oscar.
Our heroes are still sitting around, Ai is hoping the weird people will stop
working soon so they can ask about their parents. Ru, showing yet again how
cool she is, explains the situation to them. These people continually work
in order to live in the Inner World, by constantly assembling and
disassembling, they can avoid falling into Chaos. Ai stubbornly insists on
trying to ask one man about their parents, and(surprise) gets no response.
She complains about not liking this place at all. But Ru likes this place,
she likes the idea that no one here would be scared of her ability to
transform. She says that she has been searching for someone to be with, and
a place to be, ever since she came to the Inner World. In a heartwarming
moment, the Twins and Lisa tell Ru that she can stop searching, that they
want her to stay with them. Cute laughter ensues.
Behind them, Kaze shows signs of life, something's up. Chobi says something
has changed, and Lisa can sense a change in the area's energy flow.
Abruptly, the working men stop disassembling and begin to put all of the
pieces of what they were working on together to create...a huge...cube...how
freaky. Having no more work to do, they all freak out and collapse. Dead?
Not quite. The cube glows ominously and transforms into a giant robot
complete with missiles, really big drill, and other unnecessarily painful
items.
The robot chases them into a dead end, where
Kaze turns to face it. As he goes to shoot the robot, he suddenly turns and
shoots into seemingly empty air. Our heroes are confused. Their confusion
turns to horror when Oscar oozes out of the ceiling. Kaze shoots again, and
lo and behold, the red gun doesn't work on Deathlords. In the following
conversation, small bits of information are given, it's hinted that Kaze is
contributing to the destruction of the Inner World, and for it to survive,
it must always be changing. Kaze interrupts and demands to know where Shiroi
is, "We have things to settle" as he says, and we all know he meant to say,
"I want to destroy the little &@$%". Oscar finds it amusing and taunts Kaze.
Then, the Demon Gun moves.
In the middle of the transformation, the robot launches missiles at Kaze,
and Ru intervenes in time to save him, spewing energy forth and destroying
the weapons. As the gun finishes it transformation, Oscar proudly explains
that his robot is immune to all elemental and physical attacks. That's ok,
because Kaze-sama's gonna whip out...ODIN!
Now that the robot is a pile of smoking
rubble(what else would we expect from Odin?). Lisa protects them
for the blast radius with some kigenjutsu, but Kaze took that moment
to disappear, and so did Oscar. A little bit of the robot still moving is
pulverized by Chobi. And the weird men get up and start assembling and
disassembling once again. As they stand around, relieved, Ru proclaims that
she's finally found her place...by Kaze's side. She believes he left to keep
them safe from The Count, but she wants to go and protect him. And so, Ru
says her goodbyes. Making sure Lisa knows that Kaze is hers, and that she
intends to see them all again some day.
To Gaudium for a quick wrap-up. Oscar is getting berated for returning
without having found Omega, but he justifies his actions by saying that he
was feeding Chaos. Whatever Chaos is, it's apparently healthy and growing.
And with the music they were playing and the creepy close-up of Oscar's CG
eye, we know that can't be a good thing...
